Hi Guys, Having an issue when I switch on the Griso the dash lights up but goes directly to "enter code". Engine will not turn over at all in this mode. Tach does not swing to rev limit set.
I have been getting this message every once & a while but I turn off the switch @ on again, message gone, bike starts.
Also note, I have been receiving an error message that my left turn signal is out. Switch on left signal, the signals blink real fast.
Any ideas and HELP is always welcome!
Doug

Is it a relatively new bike? Did you ever enter a user code? If you have entered a user code, my suspicion is the antenna for the ignition key code reader is not working properly. Go into diagnostics and you may see some error codes that support this theory.

The flashing function for the turn signals is controlled by the dashboard. If you are getting errors, and both lights work, the only way to correct the problem that I know of is to replace the dash unit. It is also possible that both symptoms are related to a failing dash.

I'm intrigued - how exactly does the immobiliser work? Does the key have a transponder in it or something?

Yes the key has a chip in it that the bike must recognize or it won't start unless you enter your user code.

If you park near heavy interference, the immobilizer may not work well or at all!

A former boss of mine once parked his super duper Range Rover too close to a heavily populated TV/Radio antenna top of a hill (less than 50 meters away from 50 or so KW class antennas) and when he re-embarked in order to leave , nothing was working...
It had to be pushed some 100 meters away in order to start it again.

The problem is that static radio waves may develop in i.e. certain corners of a garage if there are nearby sources that can mess up the immobilizer or alarm receiver and produce frustrating symptoms - I could not get into a Nisan Micra once due to radio block-up !(no obvious door-lock  ).

I had the same problem with my left directional. Turned out that there was a small hole in the lense. Condensation built up and started causing fast blinking and the dash light to come on. Couldn't see the moisture on the inside because of the dark lense. I replaced the lense (MG Cycle carries them), and haven't had a problem since. At least I can only assume it was moisture related.
I also just found out a good MG mechanic can remove that pesky "please enter user code" at start up.

Why would you want to? The user code is for your benefit. Grahams suggestion to use the same user code as the maintenance code is what I've been following.

What is the benefit of having it?

If the key chip or immobilizer fails you can still start the bike. The code recognition is to prevent theft, or a least make it more difficult.

So, if the key or chip failed, it would automatically ask for the code? (The handbook is very unsatisfactory explaining all this, I reckon).

Semi-relatedly, how do i enter the user code for the first time? i have had the thing a year and a half and have never entered a code. The manual sucks BTW.

Toggle through the menu. It is under Settings. If you haven't entered a code, you can put one in then. If there is one there, then I don't know how you would change it. I agree about the manuals. They aren't as good as they once were.

That is correct.

Does anyone know what the immobilizer actually does? That is, does it just cut off the ignition so that the engine will turn over but simply not fire/start, or does it shut down the whole thing so that the starter motor won't work either?

John Zibell,
What would a good Guzzi mechanic do to by pass the stupid security system? I don't want or need it since I have insurance to cover theft.
I was planning a trip to Sturgis but I guess i'll have to cancele it.

As far as I know, it can't be done. There just isn't enough information available on the computer system or the dash. If someone out there knows a procedure, please let us know. Why would you need to cancel the trip? Has the immobilizer antenna failed?

Hi John,
Well, since the bike will not start, only sometimes. I can't trust to ride it from PA to Sturgis and into AZ and back.
I was going to buy a Norge next spring, but I can't trust Guzzi electronics. They seem to be similar to what Lucas was for the British vehicles.
I really believe they blew their reputation as one of the most reliable bikes ever. There seems to be way too many issues with the new Guzzi's

Doug

Sorry for taking up time, if I were to replace the ignition switch with of course comes with new keys, would this sole the problem with the bike not will to cooperate.
To answer one of your first questions,
I switch on the ignition switch the system fails to recognize that I had done so, so it asks me to enter the security code. Since I never reset it from the factory setting,it should be all zeros. Enter in a zeros, "error" "re-renter security code".
Now, if the key is not being recognized by the antenna in the main switch, than wouldn't it be a switch issue or could the dash be involved as well? The local dealer, which is doing they possibly can but with the diagnostic system that Guzzi uses is from the renaissance era. The mechanic I know rather well is a very good Guzzi tech but he haqs never experienced something like this on a Guzzi but has on Harley's, but their system was easy and full proof with everything that can be programmed.
So, in all do you think I should replace the switch?

Thank you John!
Doug
