Final Drive Gear Oil Leaks V7 & V9

Tris,

1-- Acceptable, yes.
2-- Yes, Stock they came w/a metal cap, comes off w/wrench strait up out of rear drive w/crush washer. You should be able to blow air through it or it's not venting for pressure.
3-- Get a service manual, has most torque's for nuts & bolts.

Perfect, thanks Steve

I did a 240 mile ride on it the other day, no seepage so I'd guess the bolts are tight, but I'll definitely check the level and vent

I had oil leaking from my Roamer shortly after I bought it but only after motorway speeds, I opened the level/filler cap and quite a lot of oil came out. After the oil level was corrected there has been no more leaking.

It seems to me that a bit of preventative maintenance might be in order on my 2017 V9 Roamer but a couple of questions first.
1) If the oil is level with the level plug is that acceptable?
2) My breather vent has a rubber cover
Can I get the vent out without removing the wheel?
3) Bike has 11k miles on it. Is it reasonable to assume that apart from the seals wearing out of time, I don't have any of the other issues like loose bolts?

Cheers

Tris
!. Most likley too much oil if that high. Drain and fill with the proper amount. 5.4 onces for a V7 but because of what you say in #2 it sounds like your bike might have the same set up as the V85. No need to remove the vent. What does your book call for oil quantity?
JMHO but the seals aren't wearing out early. they are either being butchered on instalation at the fctory, being over pressureised by a bad vent or too much oil, or they don't like the synthetic oil most use.

2021 V7 Special about 10 days old and with 397 miles, noticed a little puddle of oil on my rear rim and started looking around:

DSCN7004

Ideas? Suggestions? Overfilled at the factory, and being pushed out? I haven't touched anything, just snapped the picture. Thanks!

Did your dealer PDI the bike or just put gas in it? Oil is on top of rear-end, looks like it over filled.

Pull level plug while bike is on centerstand, strait up if no stand. Let excess run out on a catch rag. Clean up mess & let dealer know in case you have a warranty claim.

Nothing spilled when we opened the filler cap, but we let it drain overnight and measured just under 200cc. Calls for 180 I think, so it was overfilled to some extent for sure. I'll refill with 180 cc, clean everything and see how it goes. Thanks again.

Not sure about the earlier small blocks, but my 2021 V7 E5 calls for 180cc if completely empty (i.e., all dry parts), but only 160cc for a drain and refill. I hope this helps.

I would also check the shock and see if it is leaking oil.

Thank you, subin. Yep sure enough, it's coming from the shock. My apologies for not investigating this right from the start. I swear, sometimes I am dense as a fence post. Thanks again, subin. The aftermarket shocks on my V7 II look mighty close, we might give them a try.

Looks like Im the next victim to this issue the question is do I need to remove the nut to get it out?
I'm in the same boat, if I knew (or could find) the torque for that nut, I'd remove it myself and replace the seal and o ring. No luck finding anything.
Did you resolve this issue? I've already lowered fluid to 160cc and still leaking when run on interstate speeds for a bit.

I did get it resolved. I took it to Todd's shop and one of his guys removed it for me. He said the nut didn't need to be removed

I had some seepage onto the wheel rim. After draining and refilling with 160 cc it ran clean for about 5000 miles and then began seeping again. My dealer performed a warranty repair and all's been well since then.

Very helpful info, thanks so much!! Closest dealer/mech for me is 2 hours away so I like to do things myself when I can.
