“Road to 2121: Moto Guzzi's next 100 years”. Today saw the presentation in Mandello del Lario of the major preservation and restructuring project for the industrial site where, for exactly one century, every single motorcycle of the Eagle Brand has been produced.
Commissioned from world-famous US architect and designer Greg Lynn, the redevelopment will involve the entire site. Unique of its kind and in its style, this is a futuristic project: a location with open spaces for use by the public, a meeting place for the community, founded on culture, design and mechanics, with a strong green focus in line with contemporary trends.
Constant attention to environmental sustainability and efficient use of resources. The new buildings will make use of the existing structures, with materials chosen with close attention to efficient energy management, thanks to photovoltaic systems and eco-sustainable materials.
The site will be a focal point for Guzzi bikers and for young people and international tourists interested in the astonishing unique features of its motorcycles.
The extension of the factory's production capacity, to match the constant growth in demand, will be part of a completely new approach to the layout of Mandello.
In addition to the new factory, the project will create new conference facilities to host both internal and external events, as well as a hotel and a restaurant for a complete range of amenities to welcome visitors from around the world.
Work will commence by the end of 2021, and will be completed in the first half of 2025.

We are so chomping at the bit ever since we were last there 2 years ago. Honestly can hardly wait.
 
Never even heard of Mandello until I've been learning more about Guzzi's. Didn't know that these bikes were built on a hillside next to Lake Como. What an exotic looking place.

It's a magical place, steeped in authentic history. It'll give you chills when you visit, and if it doesn't, you're simply not alive. It doesn't hurt that Clooney lives across the lake either. ;)
 
Lake Como has been “the destination” in Northern Italy since the Roman Empire times.

Mandello del Lario is on the south-eastern shore of Lake Como.

The factory is actually right across the street from the local train station. Immediately behind the test track and the back of the factory, is a neighborhood which continues all the way back to the mountain and continues right up the side of the mountain with homes. This is why there is no place tor the factory to expand and why they are tearing down part of the old structures to make way for the new.

Here is an aerial view of the city and factory. (You can zoom in the picture as it’s high resolution.) The famous “Moto Guzzi Red Gate” is where the yellow circle is. To the left across the street is a parking lot and behind that, the train tracks and train station. To the right of the factory (behind it actually) is the neighborhood which extends all the way to the mountain.

Scott, I'll be talking to the Architect Greg soon (he's a customer and local), but I think they are nestling the new structures into the grounds where the flat pad of concrete is showing just off dead center in your photo above. I do not think they are tearing anything down. I'll chat him up and report back.
 
If the mock up in the video above is correct, (presuming the Red Gate on the right side is the original Red Gate - It looks so...) it looked like they were going to demolish some old with the open concrete area behind the new structures, but you very well may be right Todd. It will be interesting to know.

Regardless, it's just wonderful to see Piaggio dump new life and tons of cash into Moto Guzzi. They are running it "for real" and for all that it is worth, which is a welcome change from the de Tomasso and Beggio days.

Now, if I could just convince Alis Agostini to sell me her Dad's dealership! That, I would love!

You won’t get rich living and working in Mandello del Lario, but by god you surely will be happy. Todd’s right…it’s a magical place for sure.
