Tappets fit inside the block: how tight is too tight?

Hi!

I am having a long - yet enjoyable - journey rebuilding one Guzzi from the seventies.

I bought replacement parts from Stein Dinse back in the days they did not seem to stand much behind their products (example given : valve springs of too small diameter) and I am puzzled by the tappets, whose fit seem really tight.

I am afraid they will seize as soon as the engine will heat up but have not much experience with Guzzi engines so I felt that it was worth asking here...

... the engine seems to rotate almost normally by hand but I would appreciate to read about what you feel by reading this?

Yes, I was going to ask if you could spin them w/1 finger, they have to spin. The block will heat up and expand more than the cam follower but should at least be spin able. Otherwise you'll have a square flat spot on them.
 
Yes, afterwards I realized that the block is likely to expand more but ... so, I was able to insert them with oil but that was not "greasy" and no, they didn't rotate at all inside the "tube" - if rotating along their axis is well what you meant by spining - :(

I fear the tappets are over-sized, yes. I am not very confident into my second or third (or even more) hand measuring instruments but I remained these were very close (to say the least) to the upper bound.

So far I won't do any machining into the block, yet it is not so rare, but thanks for the suggestion anyway!

I think I will contact Stein-Dinse, even years after, just to read what they have to tell about that.

If all else fails, a good automotive machine shop may be able to re-size the new tappets for you. May not need much removed, a polishing operation may just do the trick.

Be sure to use a machine shop. It needs to be spun up on a lathe.
