Oil change interval

An old thread but no harm I say . I have bought agip oil with the recommended grade and inwith the correct SC and sf rating and all that fact I have them there since winter time . The bike has only done 6000 KMS since it's last service . I have done the valve clerance . It was easy but cleaning off the old gasket took some time . I fitted new gaskets with grease either side so hopefully they will be good next time round I will have new ones sat there in case anyway . Hears a question would Castrol car oil that's the same grade and syn be ok to use next time round . It's sold in the local car parts shop then I only need to get an oil filter posted I might try to triple up on them to save on postage costs . So what do you guys think about the oil it's Castrol edge I think .

Well here goes, I use Castrol synthetic in my cars and bike, correct grade of course, I don't need to use a specific motorcycle oil because my Guzzi has a dry clutch. A special oil is required for bike with wet clutches. As regards oil changes, when I bought my Breva the manual recommended using mineral oil, that was all that was around then but with synthetic oils now in the market place you can extend the time between changes. I think people change the oil way too early. There are some good studies on longevity of synthetic v Mineral. This is my personal view so don't shoot me down in flames please.

Agree that the manufacturer sets very conservative intervals. I once worked where there was an Army Oil Analysis lab. I slipped them a sample of oil from an oil change at the recommended interval on my old CAII. Their response was why did I change it. Now that said, oil is relatively inexpensive compared to engine repairs so I still change at the recommended intervals.

I’ve used Castrol Edge 10W60 in my California 1400 since new. No issues.

Thanks guys next time round I will go with the Castrol then . I suppose I should take it for a ride for a few miles to warm the oil before I drop it out it being an air cooled engine and all I only want to warm up the oil and have my catch pan filter tool and sump plug socket ready to go and news paper to line the garage floor as I'm a messy butter fingers type of bloke .

This is my shop mantra that I repeat over and over all the time...

OIL IS CHEAP. ENGINES, TRANSMISSIONS, AND FINAL DRIVES ARE EXPENSIVE !!!

:D:D:D

Depends upon one’s perspective. 19 years ago, I sold my home in San Diego in 7 hours flat for 4x what I paid for it 6 years earlier.

Instead of paying a huge mortgage in CA, we paid cash for a house in OH and had a giant pile of money left over. In a few years, we are retiring in Italy.

That was a pretty good decision if you ask me.

I have friends that pay $2,500 rents or $4,000 monthly mortgages in San Diego. Not me. I miss San Diego weather but not that much!

Many on this list prefer to do oil changes at 5,000km which is half the recommended interval. For those that do this; Do you change the filter every second change and do you also do the gearbox and drive oils at the same time?
Alan NZ

Do you have an owner's manual? If so, perform oil/filter changes at the manufacturer's recommended intervals.

It is folly to believe that anyone here has more/better engineering experience with Moto Guzzi motorcycles than Moto Guzzi.

Dave, that post is 7 years old, and in addition, Alan NZ hasn't been seen here since Sep 19, 2017.
