Hi all....... Im sure this has been gon over before.... my 2012 Griso is going through a pipe color transformation..... from the head pipes back they are slowly changing from the original chrome finish to a light gold or bronze color.
Does indicate mixture problems... presently have 2K on the clock with first service done recently.
Anything to be alarmed about??

Regards; :S

Nope. It's normal for stainless steel pipes. First they turn gold, then when you start romping on it and they get really hot, they turn blue.

There,s a threat on pipe polishing and what to use for it somewhere on this forum. I only clean them once a year before the start of the season :)

Bronze/Blue pipes are the sign of a user not a poser

I actually prefer the way they look post color change!

Gold/blue is nice, the horrible brown rust is bad, I polish at the first sign of rust then let the colour come back with a few rides...

Scot.

Yeah, the brown splotches look sickening. A couple of times a year I go at the pipes with Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish applied with 0000 (ultra-fine) steel wool and elbow grease, then wiped down with a soft cloth.

Oh those nasty splotches.

I ended up doing a good wet sand with 800 followed by 1200 grit once every six months or so. The new shiny color doesn't stay for long but I really like the new and old look. Those splotches drive me crazy though.

It's a beautiful transformation, isn't it? Eventually the color change will make it all the way to your slip on. A reason you don't see it on other bikes is the use of clad pipe, not bare polished stainless. Awhile ago I stopped polishing the liver spots altogether . . . she's aging quite nicely.

My approach, too.

I might prefer the golden hue or whatever to age spots, but I rationalize that it is just matching my Medicare arms.

I must have got a really well made set on my '07. Ive been riding it a year and put about 6000 miles on it (the bike has 10,000 total). They are discoloring a little, but nothing remotely close to gold and/or liver spots. I don't find that look very fitting on the Griso, personally. I think mine look great just a bit weathered from use...I'm really not a chrome guy anyways.

If mine get that ugly gold I'm going to powder coat them.
