battery voltage when engine running idle rpm

Hey there,

I just got my Bellagio back from the dealer.
Bellagio got a new tire, new brake fluid and the dealer was asked to take a look at the ignition lock.
Allways when I want to lock it, the ignition starts some degrees before the key is in "locked"-position.
The dealer just used some spray for better contact (idiot, I don't want electric contact right there).
On my way home I noticed, that the battery charging voltage with idle running engine is only 12,6V. On higher rpm the voltage is increasing up to 14.6V.

I never really took a look on the idle charging voltege but 12,6V seems to be a little undercharged.

Could anybody please take a look at the battery charging voltage with engine running on idle rpm and tell me, if 12,6V is normal or if there is a new problem now?

Thank you very much in advance,
Thomas

I believe the Bellagio has the old style permanent magnet alternator that runs directly on the crankshaft. That means the rotor doesn't turn as fast as a belt driven alternator. If you are getting 12.6 at idle, you are doing well.

Also, if you are going off the volt reading on the dash (I assume it has the same set up as the rest with a volt reading as one of the options on the dash) that reading is a little low compared to if you actually put a volt meter on the battery. The dash apparently reads from its supply voltage feed and the gauge wire used to supply it causes a small voltage drop.

Hello,

I think I solved the problem.
A week ago I disconnected the cable form the batterys negative pole
It looked pretty bad so I cleaned contacts and used a little bearing grease when connecting it to the battery.
Had no special pole grease here so I thougt "lets try ordinary grease"

Today I disconnected the cable, cleaned pole and cable from this very little grease and - voila - charging voltage is between 13.1 and 13.4 V on idle rpm now

Bye,
Thomas

Hello,

after I thought I managed the problem (cleaning battery poles, the ground point next to the starter and repairing harness between alternator and regulator) I realized, that the idle voltage is about 13V when the engine is cold.
The problem is, when the engine is hot the battery loading voltage is going down to 12,0V on idle rpm.
The voltage is decreasing so much that you can see the light is getting a little darker, when you have to stop at night. Giving a little more rpm the light is getting brighter and let the engine running on idle rpm light is getting darker again.
When I am riding the bike, voltage is about 14,6V, so everything seems to be fine.

Is there another ground point except the one next to the starter I could take a look at and clean?
Or maybe a cable from a ground point to the housing of the regulator could help?

Slowly I am running out of ideas…

Sincerely yours,
Thomas

The first reply you got from John explained why the voltage at idle is lower than it is above idle. It is a fact of life with this alternator. Stop worrying. If you want to do something useful add an extra earth from the reg/rec box and replace the crappy twin spade connector from the alternator before it melts.

On my Bellagio, when warm on tick over the voltage on the dash reads about 11.8V even with a brand new battery. At tick over ben like that for a few years. According to the manual you do not get max output from the alternator till you hit 5600 rpm. Just crappy Guzzi electrics but i have never had a problem with the battery not being charged.

OK, thank you.
So the everything is fine, but my little italian bike would not be a real Italian, if it would not have a new problem after the old ones beeing solved.
Now the fork sealing rings have a leakage .
