1. It gums up.
2. It caused corrosion in many electrical connections.
Replaced with Inox. However, the use of a good electrical cleaner is the way to go. You can get contact cleaners with a lubricant, specifically for relays and switches.
Hmmm, but most air cooled aircraft engines have their heads and barrels in 1 piece. I don't see the intergrated barrel/block being such a bad thing, particularly given that they're using sleeves. What could be an issue down the track is whether or not they're wet sleeves - who's owned an older...
The 1 time I was in this position, I went to the auto parts shop to determine what various sized sump plugs were in stock. I bought the next size up from the original, the appropriate tap and went work. Plenty of grease on the tap to trap as much swarf as possible is also an excellent idea...
I've NEVER seen spoke nipples on the hub of a wheel. Doesn't mean it hasn't been done, but it must be rare as rocking horse shite. You can get purpose made spoke wrenches, which definitly make it easier, but are, by no means, essential. I've not seen what obstacles you have on the rear of your...
I'm pretty sure that aluminium and ss don't rust. There's clearly some dirt there from the gravel road he was on though. 9,xxxKm is not much. Surely it's a manufacturing or material fault?
Outstanding read. I knew Ted quite well from the mid '70s until he died. My cousin bought, from Ted, the 1st new 750 S3 sold in Oz. Mario Poggioli, the owner of Thunderbikes, in Bayswater, WA is my local Gutz dealer - even being 255 miles away.
To get the bike off the centre stand:
1. Get everything ready to go.
2. Climb aboard.
3. Start your engine and give it 10 seconds to settle.
4. Slip it into 1st gear.
5. Keep BOTH feet up on the pegs. Probably easier to stand on the pegs.
6. Very gently rock the bike backwards, then with...
You beat me to it. Over the long term (5+ years) I reckon the shafty costs more in time and money than a chain. My other ride has chain drive and is used about the same amount of time/miles as my Gutz. Chain/sprocket maintenance are a doddle. Modern sealed (O-ring) chains have made a heap of...
I've tried several different options to improve long distance. For me there's still nothing better than a sheep skin cover. I've never tried the bike shorts idea, But I couldn't risk anyone seeing me trying to get them on, or off.
Electrickery will always find its easiest way to earth. One -ve electrode will be favoured over the others. As that one wears away the spark will probably find that a different -ve electrode will become the favourite. But it will always be one or another, but never all at once.
I know Todd doesn't like links to competitors, but Todd doesn't have anything at all like this. Here are 3 GPS speedos from 3rd Gear, in Oz.

Surely you blokes have someone over there who rewinds automotive stators? I know of a couple in my forgotten spiral arm of the galaxy who do it, albeit 400+ Kms from me. I've had a couple done in the past, mainly to eek out more output from them - 1 on a Beemer R100 and 1 on a Benelli 750 Sei)...
The earlier ones (V7iii and before) are about 99.99% reliable, especially as I've not read about anyone having it fail. (I've allowed the 0.01% just in case.) They work exactly as advertised. My car's gear indicator also compares road speed to rpm, except that it continues to display that last...
A half decent auto electrician can rewind it for you, but I'd assume that they'd get little extra out of it. If there was room for a significant number of extra windings I expect it to be a popular upgrade.
Anyone tried it? What did you achieve?
