I agree, 2on a scale of 1-5. You can get wooden dowel at a craft store or hardware store. There are some excellent YouTube videos on the procedure. Just take your time.
Just FYI, I rode my California 1400 out to GuzziTech in Orange, CA and Todd installed his full stainless exhaust system, installed a Power Commander and re-mapped the fueling, and modified the air filter housing. The bike ran much better on the way back to Texas, with noticeably more power and...
I decided to go ahead and part with the $$$ and ordered a new set of wires. Of course, not all four wires are the same, and two are in stock and two have to be ordered. I will CAREFULLY replace them all, and will update this thread to report if there is improvement.
I have similar symptoms on my “17 California 1400. Is there a way to check the spark plug wires to see if they are faulty? Some way to check with a volt/ohm meter? Hate to buy a new set of wires and caps just to see if the current ones are bad.
No need to tighten the valve cover bolts with a lot of force. I agree on the oil level - many owners overfill. Try removing the rubber gasket, dry it off and inspect for damage, and reinstall without any oil or sealant on the mating surfaces.
I use a manual screw-type scissor jack that has a flat platform that’s about 12”x16”. I place 1x4 wood pieces between the jack surface and the bike frame tubes so I don’t crush any wiring or drain plugs. I don’t lift the entire bike at once…I place it under the bike towards the rear to raise the...
I’m in the midst of doing my 12k service and when I removed the spark plugs, one is noticeably darker than the other three. I’m curious if anyone has a theory why? Seems like both plugs in that cylinder would be the same color?
On June 4th, I rode my 2017 California Tour 1400 miles from Granbury, TX to Orange, CA to have the full stainless exhaust and fuel upgrade installed. One day in the shop, and I was on the road back to Texas. I pretty much had the cruise set on 75mph on the way there via Interstates, but took...
I mounted a Shinko 777 on the rear of my 1400 for a round trip from TX to CA. A good deal of it was super slab with cruise on 75mph, but I did ride up through the mountain twisties near Prescott, AZ and some in New Mexico. I'm very pleased with this tire. 3,000 miles so far, and very good...
Thanks to all for the replies and guidance. I have more closely examined with the help of a mirror, and there ARE ports in the heads just inside of the exhaust outlets, and they are both plugged with recessed allen threaded plugs. So the original owner must have removed the SAS/Blowby system...
I just discovered this thread, and I can see no evidence of the metal tubes shown in some of the photos. So maybe my 2017 model was manufactured pre-Euro 4 emissions compliance?
Well, I can’t see the route the hose takes from the valve downward, but I think it connects to the air box. No more morning or gas smell in the garage. Hallelujah.
I removed the chrome tank trim on my 2017 California to discover the check valve right there front and center! It pried apart easily and I removed the internals and snapped it back together. Thanks again for the excellent step-by-step guide and photos.
The hose going down to the engine seems to...
I’m making a list of things to do when I get to the 6,000 mile mark:
- change oil & replace oil filter
- replace air filter
- do the air filter housing mod while I’m there
- stop the moaning whale
- check valve clearances
- check the spark plugs
- check the alternator wiring (don’t think it...
