2003 EV with 6300 miles new to my stable. Looking for some "experienced" discussion on the following two topics.

- what tires are good on THIS bike?

- why does this bike have a steering damper?

I like the Dunlop ArrowMax on my 2021 850 Special, but it's a different bike. Would only go that direction if I don't hear any reasonable "experienced" comments.

The first thing that stood out most on my first EV test ride was the steering being "damped". The resistance felt very weird and unnecessary. Nothing else I've owned in the past or currently ride has damped steering. What’s the REAL purpose of damped steering and is it needed?

Don't need a dampner, but it's there. Usually they are wore out, junk. You can back off the adj to neutral.

I have a little experience with this, as seen HERE. ;)
Tire threads are horrific. That said, what size rim/tire on the back of your EV? Tubeless 150/70-17 or ?
Damper is needed because of the long forks and rake it creates. Change the tires, lower the forks 20 mm, put some real suspension parts on it, and most of your issues will go away.

Todd, I’ve “studied”(?) your 99 Jackal. I’m probably going to pursue yet a 2nd EV and do something similar to that direction. This one, it will be just a cruiser. Ref photos: tubeless - front 110/90 18, rear 150/70 17.

Thanks for the response.

When I had EVs I ran Bridgetone BT45s, now I would use the BT46 or the tires GTM recommends. I think either would be a good choice. Also what GTM said about raising the fork tubes about 20mm improves handling significantly. Also as Steve said the Damper isn't really needed due to the amount of trail the bike has. Any suspension upgrades you make will be worth every penny.

Thanks for the tires suggestion . They arrived today. Will get to those over the next few days.
