Moving on from my initial “looking at” thread I am now at a rideable state. New battery arrived early. Again, I won’t state the manufacturer nor where I got it, not my intent to start a “battery thread” or detract from the store here.

I will say that one thing that caught my eye almost immediately were the CCA and cranking amps claim of 480 CCA/960 cranking amps. The manufacturer description stated it is a direct replacement for a group 20 battery, which the OEM Yuasa is. Both factored into my decision to take a punt and give it a try.

If it lasts more than a year, and doesn’t go up in flames I’ll call that a win. The Yuasa battery that came in the bike when I got it, was only installed last October and is already trash. Diagnostics indicated at least one cell is sulphated beyond recovery.

The new battery instruction booklet stated that the battery should not be over discharged and should not be allowed to drop below 40% charge. There is a push button meter on the top for indicating the state of charge.

Upon checking that, it was at 60%. Hooked up my old school Solar charger at 2 Amps for 1 hour. That brought it up to 100% on the meter so I let it set for a further hour. Hooked it up and made smoke noise immediately.

So, I’m just gonna start riding it and see what else needs attention. I know the stepper motor and valve will need some attention as will the side & center stand pivots. Those can be addressed over the next few weekends though, time to enjoy the ride for a few days.

I’d like to thank everyone for the helpful responses and comments. A pic to show the physical difference from the group 18 replacement Shorai:

Glad you had success , don't let your centerstand come off, they do that!! We at the shop were instructed to use Loctite on the bolts & if you look there is a service bulletin on it. Have Fun & Ride Safe.

Man I wish someone that bought from us would do this here. Always something else. ;)

They Do????? Holy Sh!t!!!! I didn’t know that was a thing!

I’ll double check the mounting bolts when I have a look at lubing the pivots.

I’ve almost got it down getting the Norge up on its center stand….problem seems to be a lack of retraction. IOW, it will not fully return to the stowed position without some external assistance. Pivots seem creaky when deploying also. Same for the side stand.

Rode in to work on the Norge this morning. That was a new experience for me. I normally ride a sportbike to work. More recently my S2R Monster. All are lightweight and very flickable. The Norge…..not so much. Definitely need to adjust my riding style a bit while I get used to the Norge.

My wish list for what I want/need from your store is growing by the day. I’ll be buying from you in the very near future.

I did plenty of reading around the forum about electrical issues including the article you posted, and linked to in your post.

I ran an extra ground to the engine to make sure that was a known good connection. Also cleaned all the cable ends with a wire brush and added some Corrosion X. After connecting the new battery I sprayed both terminals with ACF-50 for good measure.

This morning it was right around 40 degrees when I started up the Norge. Starter engaged and turned over the 1200 like it was nothing. After about 2 seconds of cranking it fired off and went into high idle for about 10-15 seconds and then began stepping down until it settled in around 1200 RPM.

Once I took off for work…..idle refused to drop below 2K. Once I made it to my work, it finally dropped to around 1700 RPM at the credential check point. Pretty well stayed there until I made it to my office parking lot & shut down.

Like I wrote before, I think I have some work to do in the stepper motor area. Thanks again. I’ll continue to read and learn…and to try not to ask stupid questions.

Inspected the center stand mount bolts this morning. Thankfully they’re still there and look to have nylock lock nuts installed on the inboard end. Definitely needed some lube. Retracts to the stowed position with out an extra assist now.

Also noted some difficulty with the right side bag on installation. Seems the “latch pin” moves inboard whenever the bag is slid into place, moving the latch out of position. Not only that but the retaining pin for the wire clip was bent rearward preventing the bag from fully seating.

On top of that, I found it impossibly to rotate the wire clip into place because it hits the black plastic fill panel on rotation. All fixed now. While still fiddly it does work.

Off to the paint shop to get some supplies for another project….and inquire about some Tenni Green paint. Just to see if my paint guy has a code to mix it. Just for the future. Not at the point yet where paint is any kind of a priority.

More later.

He had a number of Guzzi colors in his system. Maybe 10-12. Just not Tenni green. I don’t know who makes Guzzi’s paint (PPG?) but someone does and my paint guy has color formulas available in his system.

EDIT to add: I “think” based on what he showed me on his screen that the paint codes are for newer Moto Guzzi colors. Mainly V7s I “think” as there was only a single green that showed up, and it was called “OCHRE”.

Only seen it on the newer V7s though I’ve seen a version of it on an old Monza and a V11 back in the early Y2Ks. Those were high gloss not a satin finish.

I know for sure he has a full catalog of both Ducati and Aprilia colors because we looked through both to find colors I’ve needed.

He was able to tell me that Tenni green would be a translucent green sprayed over a silver base. Convenient that. Given I’m starting with a silver base to begin with.

Paint is a distant thought however. Got quite a bit to do before then. But it is pleasantly distracting to dream up future paint scheme ideas. Right now, this is kind of where I’m thinking:

Minus the number plate oval anyway. Still undecided if I wanna go with a front to back like above or Tenni green up top, silver below amd paint the wheels black.

Right now it just feels like soooo much silver. Who knows, I may just leave it silver. If it grows on me I mean. I’m a fan of leaving things stock….if the look appeals to me. All silver does nothing for me visually though.

Had my 1st rain ride today. All I gotta say is, the Norge is a great wet weather ride. Between the heated grips and calm air behind the fairing it was actually a pleasant experience.

After living in the UK for a couple years, my rain riding skills got pretty good. Not been uncomfortable riding in it ever since. The Norge just elevates the experience.
