First meeting with friends (Custom&Harley) Menorca.
A ride from Es Mercadal along the Cami d’En Kane (Sir Richard Kane was an Irish military man who ruled Menorca during the first two periods of the British occupation. Between 1712 and 1717, the time of his arrival on the island, he set up a network of roads that initially went from Ciutadella to the castle of San Felipe, with the intention of facilitating communication between the military of the forts of Mahón and Ciutadella and, where possible, the most isolated regions and rural farms whose fruits could hardly reach the markets. One of these roads, which was one of Sir Richard Kane's main contributions to the public works carried out on the island, is today named after him.)
The Fortress of La Mola (also called Fortress of Isabel II) was a decisive structure for the defense of Menorca from the attacks of the British army. It is located on a homonymous peninsula located to the east of the island.
The fortress consists of 10 fronts that are divided into two groups: those of land defense and those of maritime defense . The most important part is that of land defense, since for the maritime part the cliffs that surround the La Mola peninsula were relied upon.
History of the fortress
La Mola Fortress was built between 1848 and 1875 to defend the island from the British threat , who wanted to invade Menorca again to use it as a defensive base against the French.
The strategic location of the island, at the crossroads of the Mediterranean sea routes, was a source of disputes since the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815.
In 1860, when it was in the middle of its construction , there was a major revolution in artillery technology and the fortress became outdated . In 1896 a second phase of construction began where defensive batteries adapted to the new butt-loading guns were installed.
Fortunately, the fortress has never been attackedand its current state of preservation is excellent.
For those interested in history, google, La Mola, Menorca. Fascinating.
