I did the 18000 mile maintenance on my 2013 California 1400 Custom. I took the battery out to access the air filter to clean and reoil the K&N filter. Once that was all done I reconnected the battery and the fuel pump started running. No key in the ignition. No apparent power to the dash either. I tried inserting the key and turning the ignition on, but the starter/kill switch has no effect. I disconnected the battery and removed the SAE 12V accessory jumper so only the battery terminals are attached to the and reconnected the battery ended with the same condition. I’ll read about the relays onboard and test them, but are there suggestions from the group?

Thank you.

Update: Fixed, ABS unit was faulty, the Fuel Pump was not running. Connecting the positive terminal to the battery while the negative terminal was touching the negative battery post caused an arc which probably damaged the ABS unit control.

The ABS unit failed on the bike. It took damage when I hooked up the positive battery cable and it arced pretty strongly. Got a used unit off a part bike and presto chango the bike works well again. I’ll take extra care to ensure the negative terminal is away from the battery during the positive hookup.

Thank you for the follow-up. This will for sure help a fellow wrencher in the future!

Exactly my thought. Hopefully it will help someone. The (loud) humming noise was the ABS unit actuating constantly with the battery connected. I could feel it vibrating when I put my hand on its cover as I worked my way down the bike.

Standard mechanic procedure for batteries for negative ground systems. On removal, Disconnect ground (negative) first, then the positive. For installation connect positive first, then ground (negative). In the old days when lead acid batteries vented to atmosphere this prevents ignition of hydrogen gas (given off by the battery) causing a face full of battery acid. Holds true today to prevent electrical problems.
And yes I am old and worked with these old style batteries in farm, automotive, and heavy equipment. If the system is positive ground, you disconnect the positive (ground) first, and last.
