Breva 1100, 112,000 miles, Long Distance Information.

We returned home from a ride on Sunday 28th January to find oil streaks on the rear wheel rim of our 109,853-mile 2005 Breva 1100. A new CARC bevel box output seal was ordered from Gutsibits in Huddersfield on 29th January, part number TRA90511 - GU90408511. Delivery lead time was 3 to 4 weeks.

The entire CARC bevel box unit was replaced @ 4,996 miles on 15th April 2006 through a recall program by Moto Guzzi, so the leaking seal had lasted 104,857 miles.

While we were waiting for the seal to arrive, we brought forward the following jobs from this years planned maintenance schedule. With the leaking seal removed the original main CARC bearing was now visible for the first time in the machine’s life. There was no sign of undue wear or free play or unexpected debris on the bevel box magnetic drain plug.

Strip, inspect and re-grease the rear suspension linkage. Three of the eight needle roller bearings needed replacing. All other original components were reusable. They have been re-greased 3 times during the machine's life.

Upgrade original SACHS rear shock to a British made Hagon M67038 rear shock.

A 60-mile test ride since completing the work showed that the original shock although not leaking needed replacement. I’m very impressed with the Hagon shock.

Updated service history. In addition to regular routine servicing and maintenance these are the major parts that have needed attention:
4,996 miles: CARC bevel drive unit replaced under warranty recall. (April 2006)
12,789 miles: Guzzi heated grips fitted.
38,519 miles: Mistral road legal silencer fitted.
53,933 miles: Guzzi 1200 Sport windshield fitted.
64,409 miles: Rear wheel hugger fitted.
69,558 miles: The original CARC reaction rod corroded quite badly. The replacement is an Italian made Rosso Puro unit and is far better quality.
70,092 miles: OEM catalytic convertor replaced with Agostini ‘Y’ connector pipe.
70,691 miles: Battery replaced with OEM Yuasa YTX20CH-BS. (August 2015, 10 years old)
75,260 miles: Original rear brake disc replaced with EBC MD840.
86,953 miles: Front/rear brake hoses and oil cooler hoses replaced with HEL hoses c/w stainless steel end fittings.
87,099 miles: Mirrors replaced with NOS Guzzi units.
90,416 miles: Front brake light switch replaced.
95,430 miles: Petrol tank insulation mat and all breather hoses on the machine replaced.
Centre stand replaced with NOS Guzzi unit plus new springs.
Clutch hose replaced with HEL hose c/w stainless steel end fittings.
Clutch master cylinder refurbished, new lid and seal fitted.
Front wheel spindle/axle, spacers and wheel hub seals replaced.
107,474 miles: Front brake light switch replaced.
108,010 miles: OEM control relays replaced.
109,853 miles: CARC bevel box output seal replaced.
Install Hagon rear shock upgrade plus refurbishment of suspension linkage.

Alternator belt, precautionary replacements:
35,898 miles August 2010
54,095 miles January 2013
84,124 miles August 2017

Excellent. Regular maintenance and these bike will go a long time! BTW, it the seal is out of stock, a BMW oil head rear drive seal part number 33 12 7 663 482 should work. It measures 85x110x10.

That is a beautiful shock. I like the construction on it a lot, especially the chunky preload adjusting ring. Too many times those things just look so wimpy to me but that one is definitely beefy.

Nice to see high mileage Carc bikes. Gives me pause to keep VroomHilda.!! I REALLY need a MC lift table.. It is too hard at my age lying on the concrete trying to reach a component to work on..!!!

8 years ago, I scored a used lift table from a friend who quit riding. Made for Harbor Freight Tools in the US, it is very low tech, but has been a real game-changer for good maintenance.

I know what you mean. I've got a pro version Handy Lift for motorcycles, but when I work on my Model T it is a creeper from the floor!

Today is our Breva 1100's 19th birthday. We thought it would be fun to dig out some pictures from the day we collected it, all shiny and new on the 27th August 2005.

19 years and 112,000 miles later it's still going strong and although other motorcycles may come and go, it's still the best bike I've ever owned in terms of being fun to ride, quality of finish and overall reliability.

My "Parallel Twins", both bought second hand, both red '07 models, with just under 114,000 km each as we speak. I love them both dearly . What else do I need?? I don't lust after anything else.
