I bought a new Breva in '04 and ever since day one I have had a high pitched whine in 5th gear witch started at around 45 mph and quieted down at around 70 mph or 78( according to the Maryland state police). I have around 15K on it now and nothing exploded but I'm wondering,is it an issue that will leave me sitting in the middle of Podunk some day? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like a 750 Breva with 5 speed? It won't leave you stranded, although the gear whine is more common on big block 5 speeds. If you have the bike apart for another reason, replacing the 5th gear pair should take care of the whine.

BTW, there is a small block section on the forum.

As John said.
If it's a smallblock, the gears are straight-cut, which tends to whine. Never heard it on mine, but I always apply the noise-cure.
Cure are ear-plugs. ;)

If your really worried remove the drain plug and see if any bits are hanging on to it, also drain some into a cup and see if you can find anything in the oil. Nothing there no worries
