Just got it firing!
Kia ora from New Zealand.,
Just sharing my recent experience with my Guzzi 1400 California, which I've had for about a year.
I recently replaced the battery (even though trickle charged it was hard to start on cold days). The day after replacing the battery the bike entered SERVICE mode with exclamation mark warning triangle. Riding it home from work, I noticed strange idle characteristics, including rough running and high idle primarily with the clutch depressed. Obviously I thought I'd fried something in the process of replacing the battery and was up for major expenditure.
With no clue being given about error code, I surfed the forum sites and found enough evidence based on the symptoms that the clutch switch was faulty. Luckily this is a very accessible part, and with the removal of two small screws I was able to indeed verify that the pressure pin on the microswitch was not extending. I was also able to verify that on another bike.
Next step was to get a quote for the replacement part from the local shop - NZD150 with no guarantee of delivery any time soon (and the threat of a couple of hours of labour costs). Even though the price was actually lower than I expected (!) I had a closer look at the microswitch which was labelled "V4LST7". Long story short I was able to get a replacement switch delivered for $16 plus freight which arrived in two days. I bit the bullet, cut the old switch off and spliced the new one onto the existing cable.
I then needed to clear the SERVICE code by entering the service menu via the published service code 34534. Did that a couple of times as you have to select "Exit" - but this cleared the code and the bike is now fine.
Sorry about the novel but hopefully someone will find this useful or cost-effective!
Postscript - I also noted on the boards that one of the symptoms of the original problem seemed to be a "parasitic voltage leak". Maybe I didn't need to buy a new battery in the first place!
