Clank when shifting into 3rd or 4th gear

I've got about 700 miles now, and occasionally notice a metallic clank when shifting into 3rd gear. Less frequently, I notice it into 4th gear as well. There is also some driveline lash in 3rd and 4th gears, where there is almost zero lash in the other gears so makes it stand out. Anybody else noticing this?

One of the guys on the Facebook V100 group is hearing some metallic noise going into 3rd gear as well.

Mine thunks a bit in first and second. After that, it's OK. It's not as smooth shifting as a Honda, but that's why people think Hondas are so boring. My Mandello has far less driveline lash than my Honda. In fact, this bike may have less driveline lash than any other shaft drive bike I've ridden. There's one curve on my ride home from work that opens up about a third of the way through. I can get on the throttle very heavily there with the Moto Guzzi with no lash. All of my other shaft-drive bikes had to be babied through that acceleration.

Nope, no clanks up through the gears on mine - just neutral to 1st. Now that I have learned to shift it, the upshifts are buttery smooth. I'll get a false neutral into 2nd on rare occasions but that is complete user error. I do not experience driveline lash either.

I have about 800 miles logged. The most clunk I get is neutral to 1st. I’d recommend mentioning it at the first (900mi) service. In another thread, there was a post with pics (1st oil change) of the magnetic drain plug all filled with shavings and goo. Probably typical for these tight tolerance engines. Maybe once all the “break in detris” has been cleaned up, it’ll smooth out some👍😁.

My V100S feels better with each ride.

Regarding magnetic detritus, those of us who are long-standing guzzisti are used to examining oil that has exclusively bathed the internals of the engine. But the oil in this machine is also swirling through the transmission, with substantially more surface area of a brand new multitude of meshing gears learning to play nicely with each other. All that "smoothing out" that everyone reports as we rack up miles is a quite literal description of what is truly occurring on all those mating moving surfaces. The magnet grabs most of the superfine swarf that escapes or avoids the filter, the first oil change removes the bulk of it at the end of break-in ("wear-in"). All expected and part of the plan.

Hi, any update on this?
I have exactely the same, backlash in 3rd and 4th is 3 1/4" measured at the rim edge.
The rest of the gears have almost zero lash.

It appeared around 600 km, have 1000 km at the moment and I don't feel this is normal.

What did your dealer say about it?

I have this occasionally in the lower gears, shifting up to 2nd and 3rd. It's not a driveline noise, it's an external metallic sound, like sharply rapping the catalyst with a spanner.

This all seems normal. I have very little metallic noise when changing gear. My method is to just barely disengage the clutch ie just take some of the spring pressure off and there is virtually no sound, or do clutchless changes. The gearbox may have been designed with quick shifters in mind.

Also don't push the shift lever all the way home. Just enough to get the shifting drum moving. Best way I can describe it. It worked well on my Airheads, also on the 1400. On my V7lll I can't even feel or hear a gear change. I am not quite there yet with the Mandello but it is getting better. The gearbox was particularly bad on my bike but it is getting better with each mile. I am only at 4,000 miles so I expect it to continue to improve. Hopefully yours will get better also.
