Hi all. Trying to track down an oil leak around my oil fill cap and thought it would be a good idea to swap out the o-ring under the dipstick cap. Bought a kit of rings online after looking up the size required. Online sites list the proper o-ring as 28mm. When I went to fit the new ring I noticed it was much tighter and didn't fit the channel under the cap but was snug against the threads. The old one seems wider at about 33mm outer radius. Does this new fit sound correct? Along with being larger the old ring is also completely flat on both ends, which I assume is causing the leak.

Run it. If the leak stops you are good to go. If not, get the correct o-ring from a dealer. Have you seen this?

I have one I keep under my seat.

Only you can see and feel it. Put one on and screw in the cap. If the o ring is making contact with the opposite surface you'll feel it. The difference mine make regarding tactile feel is enormous compared to a flattened out o ring. I still use a tool to nip it up though. Many don't bother replacing o ring preferring to just use a tool.

Thanks. I think the new o-ring is ok my bigger issue is that the leak seams to be coming elsewhere

Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like I have bigger issues than a O-ring on the dipstick as my leak seems to be coming from somewhere else on the bike.

Check around the cylinder base gasket, and hopefully it is not the gasket between the two block halves. Oil travels, so it could even be from even higher on the engine. Clean everything up, take a ride and see if you can spot the origin upon your return.
