For my '03 California Aluminum, I have searched the Internet high and low and have not been able to find any pictures nor clear descriptions of where the EVAP canister is supposed to be located. I have no intention of leaving a canister off since it keeps smelling strongly of gas in the garage. The parts catalog and workshop manuals were not particularly helpful either.

If anyone has any pictures of the location and if possible, how it's mounted, I would greatly appreciate it.

Check your fuel cap seal. Also most folks remove the evap system and don't get the fuel smell. The 03 has them mounted behind the frame and in front of the wheel area. If you are not the first owner, you probably don't have them any more.

I appreciate it! Oh, I am definitely not the first owner, so you are correct, I do not have them anymore, but I have one of the square canisters in the mail as we speak.

This is all I had to go off of in both the parts book and the workshop manual:

I plan on looking at the fuel cap seal too. It also looks like someone capped off the fitting in the center of the fuel tank, right underneath the fuel fill cap. I also noticed that the fuel "petcock" valve was switched over from electric to manual like from the older California's. I left it on a few times, and I wonder if that had something to do with it too.

The more I dig into this bike, the more I wonder what in the you know what the past owners did. So many parts changed (not matching up with '03 parts), or just plain gone.

On bikes with the square canister it was located next to the battery. You may have to install a smaller battery to locate the canister correctly. Also I would skip putting in a tip over valve which is item 4 in your diagram. Also make sure the items from 5 in your diagram were properly sealed off.
