Final Drive Gear Oil Leaks V7 & V9

Just changed the final drive oil on my V7 III with 8k km and 11 months. Manual says to change it at 20k km, which I suspect is a bit too long, and I like to keep my vehicles tip-top.

I found very very small metal particles and a considerable amount of sludge on the magnet drain bolt, which I find normal. But the point is: For such a simple and inexpensive task, I wonder why it isn't performed earlier at the dealer.

By the way, had to special order the 85W-140 oil in my city since no one had it stock. And now have 5 liters of it... Oh well.

 More than a Life Times supply !

Your fellow Guzzistas could swing by for a Oil chage, and help you consume it.
I’d would help out, but it’s a long way to go for a service interval !

Looks like Im the next victim to this issue the question is do I need to remove the nut to get it out?

Looking at it a bit more it would seem that those steps are to take the bevel gear out of the assembly?
It doesn’t show the other end again ?
Yupp I was looking at my shop manual and you definitely got to take out the nut in order to remove that seal from the pinion gear..

The manual shows how to rebuild the unit, period. Changing seals on there own is a different issue not to be confused with rebuilding the whole unit. I'd stick a seal puller in it and swap it out, or use a small screwdriver in it careful not to break off the tip or mar up race the seal rides on. Look in parts to see how wide that race is 1st, that it's not a washer covering over the seal lip(which would mean nut off).

that SOB is not coming out. I ended up destroying it in my many attempts.

Well, you're 1/2 done. Outer ring on the brown seals are tight. Warm it up, rubber is on the outside of part of ring on seal side. Might try some spray of choice, should come out if you can get behind one side.

I gave up as I need the bike running today. Thankfully I dont live too far from Todd's shop, so him and his guys are always saving my ass

It seems to me that a bit of preventative maintenance might be in order on my 2017 V9 Roamer but a couple of questions first.
1) If the oil is level with the level plug is that acceptable?
2) My breather vent has a rubber cover
Can I get the vent out without removing the wheel?
3) Bike has 11k miles on it. Is it reasonable to assume that apart from the seals wearing out of time, I don't have any of the other issues like loose bolts?

Cheers

Tris
