The nice guys at Moto Republic here in LA told me today that my front forks are leaking round the seals. Being brave, or ignorant, and because they are hesitant to touch any older Guzzis, I guess I'm going to have to do the deed myself!

How difficult a job is it, and is there anything else I should be looking at replacing whilst doing that job?

No one in LA seems to want to touch older bikes, so any help on this topic would be appreciated.

Cheers

There's some useful stuff on Youtube. Check the condition of the chrome on the forks though. Any pitting or damage and it'll tear through the new seals quicker than you can say, "But I just fitted new seals!"

Just click the "Service" tab above. Orange CA isn't far for you.

Most leaking doesn’t require new seals. It’s caused by tiny debris like dirt, grime, insect wings and carapace material getting lodged in between the seal and the tube.

Always, before changing fork seals, I use a Motion Pro Seal Mate to clean out the seal. You’d be amazed at what I have cleaned out and then the seal works perfectly again.

The trick is to bounce the fork tubes extensively before making a cleaning pass, and to alternate direction from clockwise once, bouncing then counterclockwise, more bouncing, again clockwise…etc and to continue to do this until nothing comes out on the tool at all.

It isn’t a 100% guarantee but 7/10 times it gets the trick done for next to nothing.

It’s worth a shot and like John said, if this less than $10 fix doesn’t work for you, Todd’s GTM shop is within easy striking distance of you should you need an expert Moto Guzzi workshop.

Doh.

Just ordered one. Never knew of such a thing. I was not looking forward to pulling some forks and changing seals. May still have to do that, but now, maybe not.

I actually keep an eye out for debris on forks and have deflectors added on some to help, but noticed that my Griso has some weeping after the mutton run. As said, may still have to do the hard work, but I'll give that tool a try and and on all as PM.

Thanks.

Bill

Seal Mate worked on my Norge. A year or so later I had a Matris fork kit installed and did the seals. Before Seal Mate a piece of 35mm camera film was the tool of choice. Not much of that around anymore.

Thanks - and as you say it's well worth a shot. I was told by the shop that looked at the bike they were leaking, but I don't see any evidence of leaks...

Appreciated!
