How long will the alternator belt survive before it fails?

Answer: 140,000kms and 14 years.

Call me crazy, but this was an ongoing experiment. I do all the usual maintenance but when I originally forgot to replace the belt the first time it was due, I thought "I wander how long....". BTW it's an '06 Breva 1100. Another thing to note is that I did check the belt occassionally and it showed no sign of wear, so simply checking is a no no - change it.

Now this happened 40kms from mobile reception on a 110km mountain pass with little to no traffic. For any one who knows it - the road from Mitta Mitta to Omeo here in Victoria. One of the best roads you can ride.

I have always carried a spare belt but I didn't want to change it on the side of a winding road, besides it was raining. Anyway, I got a lift home by my roadside=care insurer, the bike will be delivered next week and I'll change the belt.

Done mine at 85,000Klms. Still in good working condition but starting to get fine cracks in the rubber on inside of belt.

Finally had the bike delivered. I've stripped it down to find a spaghetti thin belt, not where it should be. Anyway, how do I access the locking nut on the tensioner bolt? It's tucked away out of harms way and out of reach. Will removing the tank be enough or do I need to remove other parts. I've done the Google thing and come up stumps. The manual only show engine out access and I'm not keen on that option.

I've changed them at 27Kmi & 55Kmi , stick yor finger in the hole and feel it once in a while.
That mileage is amazing!!

Robert, to change the belt you only need to remove the petrol tank, air box and move the oil cooler out of the way to properly access everything. From my service records:

ALTERNATOR BELT

Actually I've just done it. I lifted the tank about 4 inches with a block of wood, to save me having to disconnect everything. Then I removed the HT box on the right side of the bike (2 bolts) and let it hang, then the lock nut was easily accessible. The nut on the rear of the fulcrum bolt was accessible with a 15mm open ender just forward of the left rocker cover. Job done.

All I need do now is find a new "special screw" that holds the top of the oil cooler. Mine snapped while I was inserting it, just a little more than finger tight. I suppose it was fatigued. I have a supplier up the road and a plan B in case the easy out doesn't work for the bit in the thread. I already looked up the part number (05164630).

You're welcome. Handy to know that it's possible to do the job without removing everything. I've been lucky and just replaced the belt as part of routine servicing.
