How to prevent fuel splashing or shutting off while filling up?

I haven’t managed to find a post in this forum talking about it.

I’m guessing there’s some type of baffling in the fuel tank that prevents me from filling up the fuel tank normally. I have to fill it up extremely slowly, if I don’t, fuel splashes out of the tank, or the nozzle shuts off thinking it’s full.

Am I crazy, or is there a way to fix this? I’ve never had this issue with my ‘22 ninja 650, it has a normal fuel tank with no baffling or design inside of it.

It’s been mentioned elsewhere, but there isn’t a thread. Yea, it is “a thing.” The only way I’ve found to mitigate the issue is to have the pump nozzle as close to 90 degrees vertical to the tank fill hole, as possible. And, to go slow. Keeping the nozzle as straight up as one can, maximizes the venting space around it in the narrow tank opening. Just my $.02. Still splatters at times - other times not. I just got home from a 3 day ride, and the slow fill ups in the heat, with gear on, had me wishing it would fill quicker. A clever engineer could probably suggest a spot to drill a vent hole or something, but I wouldn’t like the hassle of creating debris dropping inside the tank - or, …removing the tank to do it “properly” . I point he nozzle preferably backwards under the seat front.
And fill slow and carefully.
It takes at most 30s longer to fill the tank, so no real issue.
It’s probably the shallow tank dummy design and should be found on different brands with such tank position.

I like to grab some paper towels from the windshield cleaner station and wrap that around the tank opening, surrounding the gas nozzle to mitigate any splashing on the paint.

On my V85TT its the same problem, seems like some government agency has deemed it needed to have some stupid fuel tank that you cant fill to the brim. My last three Ducatis, triumph Thruxton and Vstrom 1050XT, you fill just below the locking cap. Also had the same problem with a Harley road glide. Dont understand it but but thinks it will be safer for me...

You can try the McCuff. Google it. They give you a choice for sport bikes or V twins. I tried the sport one on my 1400 Cal Touring. Absolutely useless. Maybe I should have gotten the other one. Your results may vary.

As Tebax says have the fill nozzle pointing back under the seat there is a vent in the filling tube to let air/vapours out. I can fill at max speed this way and when the pump cuts I just fill the last litre or so slowly.

I was going to suggest this. It works on most all modern Guzzis since ~2006 or so. I do it seated on the bike myself, but some people lose their minds over it.

I've found some gas station pumps are fine and others are a pita. I think some station have narrower nozzles or something. So I just go to the stations whose pumps work well. Making sure to aim towards the back like others have said, that seems to help as well.

By now you are filling up quickly and sputter-splash free, following the suggestions given already. I haven't noticed, perhaps overlooked, any mention of the drawing of the fuel tank in the replacement parts manual, but if I'm seeing it correctly there is no storage in front of the filler, only back toward the seat, and there appears to be shaping of a frame-bridging shelf just under the filler opening, so the only free-flow space is straight back under the seat. I have a Youtube video of a fill-up following the suggestion to aim the nozzle back, and it works.

Yes, I just watched your video and as a new Mandello S owner who struggled with my first fill-up it appears to be a godsend! Anxious to try it out. It looks like pushing the nozzle in deep and pointing it back is the key.
