HYDRAULIC VALVE ADJUSTMENT

I have a 2003 california 1100 titanium. The re-call was done last year replacing camshaft & lifters. The valve adjustment seems to tight. Any suggestions to how to adjust hydraulic tappets and what is the lash, "0" or "0" plus additional 1/4 turn???

No adjustment on hydraulic valves. An initial clearance is set when the recall is done, then the lifter takes up all the slack when it gets oil pressure. The adjuster should have been broken off when the recall was done so you can't mess with it.
 
Thanks for replying John. My concern is that I feel the initial set up adjustment is incorrect. when I crank the engine to start. It feels like low compression on one of the cyl's and full compression from the other. Also I have a backfire when accell from part throttle. I suspect tight intake valve and this I'm afraid could lead to a burnt valve. For this reason I would like to re-adjust the valve lifters. I have adjusted many hydraulic lifters when installing new cams in automotive applications and the symptoms feel just like an over adjusted valve. I checked the Guzzi manuals I have, but none of them mention valve adjustment procedure for hydraulic lifter applications.
If you have any specs or procedures I would appreciate anything you can give me.

If the adjusting screws haven't been sheared off, than you can check the initial clearance. If they have been sheared off you will need to replace the adjuster. You will have to remove the valve train and use a telescoping magnet or similar to extract the lifter. You will need to use a piece of wire to release the check valve to compress the lifter. You will need a special rod from the kit to set the initial clearance. See page 23 of the attached PDF. I haven't done one, but I know a few on the list have done the update. Hopefully one of them will chime in with that specification for the initial clearance.

Are you running the right weight oil (5W40)? If it's too thick could it be over pressuring the lifter?

The 5W40 isn't critical. I ran 15W50 in my 03 and never had a problem even without the cam recall. The Guzzi service rep at the time told me any bikes running the15W50 didn't have a problem with the cam. Weight of oil will not adversely impact the lifters unless it get too thin to hold pressure in the lifters.
