Congrats and welcome to the GT Forum & Guzzi Famiglia! Hope you’ll add your info to our Registry below. The Special Sport was made only in 2002, so hopefully you have a solid lifter engine. More info can be found on a search here. See you in the Tonti section, and HERE is my adventure with mine. Enjoy/cheers.

Then I honestly have no idea which version of 2003 California it is then. That is just what the previous owner told me. I have been trying to get a definitive answer for a few days now looking up the VIN and searching the internet with little luck. I did confirm it was a 2003 though, and the PO said he had the recall done for the hydraulic lifters.

I will check out the registry and your adventure with yours. Thanks for the welcome!

Dead give away is the valve covers and the hydraulic lifters. It would be an Aluminum per below. I added my link above and again for you HERE as to what I did with mine. If you post a photo of the rear fender it will further confirm. It would be a 2003 model year. The VIN# will tell us. Look forward to your VIN# and related on the Registry.

Thanks! Top Gear Powersports in Roselle, IL confirmed through the Piaggio system that my VIN shows up as a 2003 Aluminum as you said. Rear fender picture below:

After becoming more familiar with the bike, I noticed that the side covers under the seat show evidence of being painted black, as well as the throttle body covers.

There are a few oddities with the parts installed that had me a bit confused, but I could see them all being swapped out. So far, they are:

- Handlebars (might be from Jackal or Stone)
- Handlebar riser / clamp (black instead of grey)
- Headstock / front protector covers (chrome instead of black)
- Rider seat (🤷‍♂️)
- Front fender (Not Aluminum nor Titanium)
- Fuel tank: Not an Aluminum model tank since no internal fuel pump assembly. Fuel pump is external under the seat. UNLESS because of the build date being 05/2002 for a MY2003, they used 2002 parts OR one of the previous owners swapped it out for a different tank of a different vintage of bike.
- Spark plug guard on valve cover (polished, not grey)

I guess I have to remember it is a 2003 and this bike has lived a lot of life in 21 years.

Yes, an Aluminum it is, steel wheels too. Repainted to look like a Bassa or Special Sport. Nice bike. Congrats I may know the PO, I was N. IL Rep for the MGNOC when bike was new. Saw the sticker on windshield. There are a few Guzzi's in Aurora and more in Fox Valley area.

You might., he was up in Winthrop Harbor. He said he bought the bike when he lived in Florida, but I do not know how long ago that was. I am glad there are more Guzzis in the area, and maybe I will start noticing them more now that I have one.

I appreciate the confirmation of the model. The VIN itself really did not tell me much other than what I found below:

- From Moto Guzzi letter to the NHTSA: https://static.nhtsa.gov/nhtsa/downloads/MfrMail/ORG3987.pdf

- From the Moto Guzzi Club Nederland on "framenummers", which all this tells me is that it is a Moto Guzzi California (KD)...

Leaves a little bit to be desired 😐....

If you can locate some EV wheels, you can run without tubes in your tires.
Oh, if only, that would be great. That will have to be a mod for later. There is plenty for me to address on this bike at the moment. I did convert it to floorboards though, which was sketchier to do than I originally thought.
