Ignition switch - how does it separate?

This is a stupid question I know, but I can't work out how to get the bezel / top part of the ignition switch off so I can insert it into a replacement instrument panel.

The previous owner fitted an aluminium binnacle and the ignition switch was installed in that, but I ended up tearing the aluminium up to release the switch when I installed some new instruments.

I thought it might come apart easier once released from the aluminium housing but it didn't. I've tried a couple of hefty vice grips on it thinking that because the outer part has knurling on it that it would screw onto the bottom part. Quite a lot of violence was involved to no avail.

Is there a secret to it? I have to sort it out soonish as the zip ties holding it roughly in place don't last very long. Cheers for any help!

Which smallblock? From what you describe it's late 70's to 90's. It should unscrew unless rusted up, try soaking the threads. You should see the threads. Looked at another post you put up, V50 III has same switch as the bigblocks, threaded knurled nut circular.
Unless it's some after market switch, I have a Zadi replacement on my Cal2 and it's the same nut. On some they were plastic knurled nut, some metal.

Ok it was a case of not enough violence.

I leaned on it hard and unfortunately the top separated from the plastic base where the switch disk is. However now I had the top and the lock in my hands it was easier to get leverage on the knurled nut. It of course had been glued on with some kind of thread locker.

Took a lot of fiddling to rejoin the lock and switch but finally got it together without breaking the little tabs.

Cleaned it up. Threads looked good. Put it where it’s supposed to be. Just waiting on the light panel from Germany and I’ll have a better looking cockpit.

Thanks @V700Steve
