Not wanting to take a thread off topic, I'll post this in a new thread....

In amongst the usual jounalist banter on the MCN 1200 sport video posted by RacerX is a comment that the Italiano Polizia di Stato have just ordered 120 850 Norge....

Now my only experience of Italy was manny years ago on a work visit to Milano for three days in the middle of January and so I cannot speak with any authority, as my impression of Italian roads is that they are ruled by scooters, which I am sure is a somewhat limited impression.

But really an 850????? I would have thought that the grubby element would require a bit more grunt to chase down than that offered by the 850. Of course it might be a money thing with recent reports of the Italian economy being somewhat depressing.

So the question is is the 850 Norge a good steed on which Italy's finest will be able to keep the peace and chase down wayward tourists and other unsavoury grubs?

Hello;

Aside from the major motorways... Most of the roads in Italy are narrow, tight and the traffic speed is NOT like in the US. So, 850cc is MORE than enough bike to chase the villans. It's much more about handling than raw speed.

Think New England, Boston, Lower Manhattan, etc for a mental model.. Not: Dallas, LA, Houston and long stretches of Nebraska straight aways....

We also recently read about the German police ordering 850 Norges to replace the former BMW 850's.

Why shouldn't they? They are numberous and do have excellent communication. ;)

Excellent communication? Do you know what German sounds like? (Oh, I guess you do :silly:)

I've seen Italian urban police bikes ... Deauvilles... I do guess they have something more beefy for autostrada patrols (including Mitsubishi Imprezas for when there's a real need for speed).

Technically excellent, wisehead :laugh: . The content of the communication to us civilians are usually a one-way-communication....:dry:
Italian urban police are using the most on two wheels. In Rome I've also seen them on scooters.
But the tough guys are usually patrolling in Alfa Romeos.

Really I don't think any European police force are using the motorcycles for anything than traffic control and clearing the roads. Hunting down cars are much too dangerous on a bike.
