Anyone put lever guards on their Griso?

I'm considering putting something like this on my '07. One issue I see is having to "drill out" the stock handlebars' threaded plug if I were to be able to insert the universal expanding fitting. Any advice on removing this threaded plug without ruining the bars would be appreciated.

Why not use the threaded plug instead of the expanding units for attachment? I think the expanding plugs are supplied since most bars are just hollow tubes.

I agree that would be ideal. Not having touched this product in the real world I don't know how it comes apart. Ideally, it would be great to remove screw, ditch the expander guts, and run the stock allen bolt back through.

These Acerbis ones are expensive. Amazon ones are around $30. I suppose I could buy and try...

Could I be the first Griso owner to put these on? I'll have to be the pioneer!

Be careful what you ask for!

Short answer: They look cool.

Long answer: Since they started selling Italian motorcycles the past couple years, I've been visiting a Guzzi dealer in Buffalo (http://www.kwbuffalo.com/). Of course, the Guzzi's were my main motivation. He also sells MV Agusta, Aprilia and Brammo. There has been the same Griso black/silver 1200 on the floor every time I go there. Lots of California's and V7s. Random Stelvio and Norge here and there.

The MV's started stealing my attention on these visits. The 800 Dragster is a sick Brutale model. Reminds me a lot of the wow factor of the Griso--very distinctive motorcycle. It has folding mirrors and these type lever guards. I'd never really seen this style guard before.

In August I test rode a Brutale 675 there. Fun bike from what I could tell riding 5 miles through a suburb. Aggressive is what I would say, thrilling power in the smallest bike they make. Comfort was the problem. I couldn't see riding this bike for any real length of time in the twisties. Since I'm not a rich guy, I can't have this bike in the garage for occasional short romps, which is why the bike exists.

Here's what I came away with after riding the Brutale 675: The bike to buy is the 1200 Griso. Less money. Way more comfy. Looks awesome. AND it has the added zip of the 8 valve motor. I haven't ridden a 1200, but my 1100 is pretty darn fast and a jump from 75-90 hp must make a huge difference.

Of course, my '07 Griso was never in danger of being traded or sold.

So I got the pretty childish idea to pimp my Griso out with some handlebar bling. [My friend also talked me into adding red LED lights behind the mesh bodywork accents (front and rear). He bought the materials and is harassing me to come over and install before snow flies so I can ride it to our bike nite before winter! I'll post pics....]

THAT, sounds like a very honest answer. Thank you!

After asking though, I read that they keep other motorcycles from bumping your levers. I would think the only time this might be an issue is on a race track. But, I like your answer better.

Yes, they were developed as a safety device for racing, where other riders bump into each other and activate others front brake lever. You'll see them on most all race bikes these days starting with MotoGP. As John says, you should be able to use the stock bolt on stock bar ends or perhaps a slightly longer bolt (or the one from the kit if so lucky).
