• Ciao Guest, The owner of this website and GTMotoCycles.com lost his home completely on the morning of January 8th in the L.A. Wildfire Storm. Most of his neighborhood is gone, and a few friends were killed along with their pets. The GTM SHOP and STORE are functioning normally, but we DEMAND EXTREME PATIENCE on orders as we are a SMALL business and Todd usually has his hands on nearly every order before it goes out. You can find more info on a post named L.A. Wildfires in the USA section. Our heart and best go out to everyone in this horrific disaster.

I just purchased a pre-owned 2022 V85 TT E5 with 2400 miles. I did an engine oil change and noticed very fine metal filings in the oil but I’m new to Moto Guzzi and I’m not sure if this is normal or not. I don’t have any maintenance history records so I’m unsure how often the oil has been changed prior to my ownership. Do the images below look like a normal amount of metal? I don’t hear any abnormal knocking noises and the engine appears to run fine. Any advice is appreciated!

I would pour oil through a cloth to get a better view. It may have been changed at the 600-1000mi inspection or not. Anytime metal is in oil it's not good. Does it stick to a magnet? Drop the oil filter & look at whats on it. It is not normal. Maybe it's never been changed.
Swap out oil filter, fill w/fresh oil & ride it. Only way you'll find out. Inspect oil next time, through a cloth.
You may want to drop pan & clean it out plus clean out oil filter well.

Thank you for the cloth straining idea. I’ll give that a try ant the next oil change which I plan to do in 1000 miles since I already recycled the oil. Any value in sending an oil sample away for analysis? I’m curious if any other V85 owners have seen similar particles in their engine oil. Of all the oil changes I’ve done on my cars and motorcycles I’ve never seen anything like this.

Riley, know that this is a very knowledgeable Tech site, not social media full of opinions. Steve noted it already, but always best to remove and clean them to show what they are. Magnetic or not is always good to know as well. It is not uncommon to find metallic bits in the oil on occasion on the first few oil changes, with rare few exceptions you'll see here on a search... Which please always try a search before posting, as noted at the top of every page. Most topics have been very well covered here.

Oil analysis will tell you the composition of the metal by elements. You can initially expect some bearing material during break in, but after that there should be little to none.
I've done 300 miles since the oil change, is that a sufficient number of miles for sending off for an oil analysis or should I do more miles before sending off a sample?

Thank you for the feedback. I'll give it some more miles. I've never sent oil off for analysis, do you recommend Blackstone Labs or perhaps there is a better option?
I can't recommend a commercial lab. Where I retired from (a special reporting activity for Army Materiel Command) also included the oil analysis group for the entire US Army so I'm not familiar with commercial companies.
