I sussed out an issue with my intermittent starter problem and wanted to share it. It may already be a known problem so I apologize if redundant.

My Norge would experience an intermittent starter issue. The solenoid would always latch but the starter failed to engage. This would happen after the motorcycle reached full operating temperature and was parked for any period longer then say, 20 minutes. What was discovered is there is no formal heat shield protecting the starter. On the Norge, the exhaust pipe runs directly below the starter, consequently, the rising heat from the exhaust pipe and surrounding area would cause the starter case and internal components to expand and the tolerances inside the starter would close down to the point where the starter would jam. Rapping on the starter with a rubber mallet would consistently free the starter and the motorcycle would start right up. To add insult to injury, the decorative plastic cover surrounding the starter channeled the heat directly to the starter effectively acting as a blanket trapping the rising heat. Simply removing the decorative cover and applying an adhesive heat shield tape (available at any auto part store) around the starter insulates the starter from radiant heat thereby solving the intermittent starter problem. Hope that helps.

Good advice. I suppose the fabric-like exhaust tape wrapped around the exhaust would help too. While that stuff looks badass on a bobber, not so pretty on a Norge luxury liner perhaps.
