Hi everyone, first time posting in this forum. I’ve got a V7ii Stornello that I bought used last year and is my first motorcycle. Was out riding a couple weeks ago, and on the way home the clutch cable snapped (it was rubbing and fraying from the adjuster at the lever). I installed a new cable, lubed it and greased it at pivot points, adjusted the adjuster bolts to get 2mm of free play as the shop manual indicates (I think it at least), but when I start it up and go to first gear, nothing happens. Have I missed something somewhere? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Are you saying the clutch won't disengage? Or that when you release the clutch in gear, no power is transferred? I'm hoping you didn't touch the adjuster at the gearbox.

I would say no power is transferred. When I’m in first gear, releasing the clutch would let the bike start to roll, but now nothing.

I posted to a Facebook MG group for advice on how to change the clutch cable, and several folks recommended to loosen the adjuster at the gearbox to be able to get the cable attached. So I only loosened the nut at the adjuster armature, didn’t take it off or pry it with a bar like I’ve seen elsewhere.

When I installed the new cable, I removed the clutch lever from the handlebars, routes the cable through the adjuster nut and out the barrel into the clutch, then the barrel into the armistice at the other end. Without loosening it, I don’t know if I would’ve been able to get the clutch lever back in place.

So how much have I mucked it up? :sweating:

By moving the adjuster at the gearbox you have messed up the angle at which the lever engages the clutch push rod. If you had researched this forum first you would have found out not to do that. My recommendation is to have it hauled to your dealer so they can set the cable correctly.

I've not had to swap a clutch cable on the V7 yet. I always just sort of assumed it would be a straight-forward operation. But if the adjustment of the cable is that temperamental, it seems odd to me that there is no mention of the proper way to do it in neither the owners manual, nor the service manual.

In your pic where the red points to the end of the cable did you mess with the lock nut and screw on the left side of that arm? All you needed to do was pivot the arm forward with a lever, rope etc and put the barrel in. Then adjust out the slack up top.

If you carefully read his post above, he did move the adjuster. That is what has messed him up.
