• NOTICE: The owner of this website and GTMotoCycles.com completely lost his home on the morning of January 8th in the L.A. Wildfire Storm. Most of his neighborhood is gone, and a few friends were killed along with their pets. The GTM SHOP and STORE are functioning normally, but we DEMAND EXTREME PATIENCE on orders as we are a SMALL business and Todd usually has his hands on nearly every order before it goes out. You can find more info on a post named L.A. Wildfires in the USA section. Our heart and best go out to everyone effected in this horrific disaster.

I'm bringing an old 77 T3 back to full running order, and as it's been sitting for several years, I've been working through all the old crumbling rubber. The old Avon Venom front and Dunlop D404 rear tires have plenty of tread, but are cracked on the sidewalls, so what do you all recommend? I don't need them to look vintage, and want to avoid tramlining if possible.

Replace them. The traction available from old rubber isn't enough. I'd recommend staying with a bias construction tire. I don't want to start a tire thread, but I do like the BT 46s on the Tonti framed bikes. I use them on my LeMans.

Replacing them is a given! Cracked sidewalls make me very nervous. I have BT46 on an Enfield Int650, and while I do like them, they're not the least expensive.

Would you seriously comprimise on a motorcycle tire for a few dollars? That's not something I would consider. Please don't take this the wrong way. I'm not the least bit wealthy but I will pay top dollar for the best tires I can in any way afford.

Great point Raven. I think there are two other arguments, namely that I no longer ride like a demon, and I believe that certain brands demand a premium price, even if they're not any better than others. So far I've seen the BT46 recommended which is a tire I'm familiar with. I'm curious what teh options are, form Shinko or other brands for example.

A friend of mine was running Shinko tires. I talked him into a set of BT46s. He couldn't believe the handling and braking difference. You get what you pay for.

Although "More expensive" sometimes just means "Costs More" and not "Better for My Purposes". Sometimes you have to try and see.

:wasntme:I have the Shinko’s on the XL650 and just put a set of the BT 46’s on the V7 at the end of the season, I’m ok with them both, can’t really compare between the two bikes :giggle:
