New battery is being prepared. Filled it yesterday evening, and as Pete suggested, let it sit overnight so that (quoth the instruction leaflet), the electrolyte could permeate into the plates optimally. Put it on my little charger this morning (measured 12.9V just before), and after about 3h, the yellow bulk charge light went to green (trickle/maintenance charge).
Since I'm not in a hurry, I removed the charger (measured about 13.4V IIRC) and let it sit on the window sill. Got just over 13V just now, before I put the charger back on, which promptly went to bulk charge mode again. I'll leave it overnight now, and install the thing tomorrow before leaving to say hi to my mom (500km largely on highways).
Curiously, I had a couple of stalls this morning - not related to my old battery. The bike'd been running beautifully the last couple of days, but this morning the engine just wouldn't idle for a minute or so. It wasn't even extremely cold - but I wonder if this could be related to the fact I had to leave her on the side-stand yesterday evening, something I rarely do.
