I wanted to make sure that the oil passages were not plugged and would supply oil to the rocker arms. Just to be safe I then pumped oil through them and all was o.k. except one rocker arm spindle bolt had oil leaking past the lock washer. Is this normal or should I be concerned about it ?

I pumped the oil in here in the above picture.

Oil bubbled out here at the lock washer.

You are getting oil up there and that is good. If you replace the washer, or close up the gap that should prevent any oil bubbling out. Personally I wouldn't bother me it it does bubble a little so long as oil is getting to the rocker.

O.K. Thanks for the advice. I did tighten the bolts to the recommended torque values.

I ordered new bolts from MG and they specified these for the spindle bolts. They are listed as 14 mm.

It’s supposed to do that. This means that oil is being forced under pressure into the rocker arm. It all drains back down to the sump the same way.

O.K. Thanks Scott. Measured the length of the threads and they have a distance of 14 mm. Did not know if it would make that much of a difference to lose the small amount of oil that was coming out.

You are welcome.

The rocker arm doesn’t have any ball or needle bearings up there. It relies on oil under pressure (a liquid) which cannot be compressed, which surrounds the shaft and the rocker arm “floats” in this oil surrounding it.

:) 1stly , everything above is correct , but if you really wanted to you could run the engine , and have a look see at the ends of the rockers and see if oil is coming out from between the spindle and the rocker, thus verifying oil flow along the spindle .
Part of the oils job is also to cool things down so any oil flowing around the head and down drain holes is still doing a good job ..... specially if there is oil visible coming out of the rocker/spindle . However ;) I do understand that it can be hard to stop thinking about these things ..........at 2am......and some more at 3am . Maybe a dowty washer , or a wee bit of loctite around the bolt threads where the washer sits will stop the leak DSC02527

It is on the upper bolt. Gravity will cause it to flow right over the rocker arm.

I think you are way over thinking this one but chocolate, vanilla, strawberry…
