Rear Shock Protection

I don’t remember where I found this idea but figured that the Stelvio needed some kind of Rear Shock protection from all sorts of crap carried from the rear wheel.
At the same time protecting the shock will most probably prolong its life!

As you know the bike’s rear suspension looks like this. It has a rear splash guard but doesn’t protect the suspension.

The material I used was leftover utility flooring tile from when I built my workbench. It’s made of rubber about 4mm thick … pretty flexible, resistant to dirt, oil, solvents and all sorts of neat garage products.

I cut a piece off of the tile to the following dimensions. The corners were trimmed by trial and error because of the swing arm contour. This is done by fitting the rubber between the air box and the rear splash guard….. a few times.
The dimensions are tight therefore you will have to wiggle the pad to insert it between the splash guard and airbox and be careful there is a breather pipe on one side!

Once it was trimmed it should look something like this.
I’ve been riding around with it for a while and can safely say it hasn’t fallen off  and serves as protection.

Cheers

I added a shock sock.
Though I always like the home brewed fixes. :D

Same thing Graham did to his 1100 Breva years ago. The post was on the original board, I'm not sure his post migrated to this new one. I've done similar mods to several of the CARC bikes in my area using rubber floor mat material that is available cheap at WalMart.

I made a similar shock protector for my old G11. Just a minor warning......it rubbed thru' the paint where it touched the swinging arm. Make sure yours has plenty of clearance even under full compression/load.
