replacing breather hose...remove starter motor???

Noticed I was dripping a little oil from my 2009 V7 Classic. Finally realized that the breather hose was split and cured it temporarily with a little electrical tape while ordering a new one from Af1. Got the hose and having a damn hard time putting the new one in...can I remove the starter motor to get at it easier? If so, should i disconnect the battery? Total novice at anything other than routine oli and filter changes...
 
Not to sure about the fitting of your breather hose but if you take out the starter motor definitely remove at least the negative battery terminal, it is all too easy for the positive cable that is connected to the solenoid to accidently touch the frame and sparks will fly or possibly worse.
