Shifter center return spring

It appears my beloved v7 has fallen victim to the failure prone shifter center return spring. I've seen other people with the same issue, but no one who has actually done the repair. Anybody have any suggestions as far as special tools, "crabbing the frame" to remove the gearbox, or gaskets or other parts I may need to replace while I'm in there?
