While riding the speedometer works when I am accelerating or using steady throttle but as soon as I am off the gas the speedometer goes to zero.
The cable seems to be intact but where it goes into the gearbox it can be pulled out without unscrewing the sleeve.
Am I missing a part? I'm hoping a fix is not too complicated.
The bike is a 73 California
Thanks in advance for any useful info.
Unnamed Speedo cable

You are missing the split Ferrel that locks the outer cable sheath to the drive unit. It goes between the drive unit and the "nut". That part is not listed separately. If you can't locate a used one, take the cable with you and find a Ferrel that will just slide over the metal part of the sheath. Cut a vertical slot in the Ferrel and assemble. That should lock the cable in place. If I had one I would send it to you.

I should say I have the complete inner cable. Not sure they are the same as the California i.e. length or diameter. This one is from a1975 850 T.
Cable 1

You used to be able to buy the nut & rubber and got the ferrel free. OR you could buy the whole thing OR you could just buy the cable & housing.
Find an old mom & pop motorcycle shop if you can. Maybe out on Long Island, he ride one like that. Joel's shop.
Might ask the Store here, Todd may have one in a junk drawer.

For this really old stuff, call Mark Etheridge, the owner at Moto Guzzi Classics. He will have what you are needing. This is his specialty.
