Hi All, this may be my first post so here goes. Test rode a Stelvio a couple of years ago, really impressed with the ride and would like to add one to the garage. I've started looking again but on researching the topic found a high number of cam failures on the 8V engines. I believe they starting using the new roller cams in late 2012 and have no idea if this has solved the problem. So asking the collective knowledge if this is the case.
Would the Vin number and engine Number tell me if the bike has the roller cam upgrade, I'm a bit concerned as some bikes often spend a long time at dealers before they are first registered.

On a secondary topic anybody recovered there seat and used a gel pad, if so where did you get the gel insert from?

You are correct that it was late 2012 production. Unfortunately there was no real correlation to Engine or Vin Number. Easiest way is to take the head covers off and take a look. There were even some reports of early 2013 having flat tappets but nearly next to none but still best to take a look. Luigi must have found some lying around the shop. You will be fine with 2014 and up.
 
I have not heard of any roller tappet bikes that the valve train failed. If the bike was built with roller tappets, or properly converted to roller tappets, it should not fail.
Roller tappets are good, but that is not exactly the same as having "fixed" the problem. I think it is more like avoiding the problem.
A roller tappet bike is likely the way to go with the 8 valve lump.
 
Before you sign for anything, have a look under the valve cover no matter WHAT year. It is easy to do. If it is flats, assume that upgrade cost into the deal.
 
Dunno where I scored this info from, somewhere on the internet. I saved it just in case someone asked. These are the crossover dates, but since I can't verify the source, use with caution.

Thanks for your help, I hope any dealer will be ok with having the covers removed. I guess 2014 on would be the way to go or go for a low mileage 4V. Any issues with the 4V bikes?

2013+ is good. 4V = 8V in italian logic, no major known issues to date on the roller rocker motors.
