So, I've got a 2003 California EV (hydro with the relevant recalls). This afternoon I had planned to change the oil. I had noticed that there was slight seepage from around the head gasket, so I figured that while I was at it I would retorque the head bolts to be sure they were good and tight. Simple enough... I thought. I removed the rocker arms to get to the head bolts, and retorqued the bolts to spec, then went about putting it back together. BUT, the rocker arm shafts, which slid out relatively easily earlier in the afternoon, would not go back in. I figure that torquing down the head gasket shrunk it some small amount and that the shrinkage reduced the valve clearance enough to affect the alignment of the rocker bodies to the rocker body housing thingy. If this was a mechanically adjusted valve engine, then this would not be a problem. I would just turn out the adjusting nut a bit, fit it all together, and then readjust the valve tappets. But it's not. It's a hydro, with the adjusting nuts snapped off during the hydro recall service. So... What do I do now?

Any wisdom from the Guzzisti is welcome.

Fish out the lifters with a magnet. If memory serves, there is a small ball bearing you can depress to relieve the pressure in the lifter. The rockers should be easy to install after. The valves will be a bit noisy on the first start up until the lifters refill. Something like this should do the trick.

Ahhh. Thank you! I knew there had to be a solution and that someone would point it out and it would seem so obvious afterwards.... They are hydraulic lifters after all....

Thanks! I'll fish em out and decompress them later this week and hopefully be back on the road soon.
