Just got it firing!
Greetings,
I'm new to the forum and my rebuilt Ambassador had been rock solid reliable in the 20 years since I finished it. It only gets ridden two or three times a year and has 90K miles showing on the odometer. On my last ride the generator light began some pulsing and then went continuous. I made it the 10 miles home without issue.
I've searched extensively for testing procedures for this generator and regulator without luck. The only one I found on this forum I think referred to a Bosch generator which I believe has internally different wiring than the Marelli (Type A vs. Type B in generator lingo). This seems to matter when performing certain tests on the generator itself. Also, my regulator appears unbranded but fits well in the place allocated for the Marelli. Its terminals are in a different order compared to what I see in the Chilton manual.
The only action I've taken so far is to clean the contacts in the regulator. They are not sticking but the contact for the Armature/D+ relay appears to have a raised point on one side and maybe a pit on the other. I think this contact is for the current limiting function.
I don't think the generator brushes have been changed but I've also been told that charging problems are usually traced to the regulator. I'm hoping someone has some experience with this and a few tests that can be done with the components in place. TIA for any help you can provide.
Tom
