Accidentally engaged first gear with the side stand down and of course the engine stopped. Pulled the clutch lever in and pressed the start switch, nothing happened. Engaged neutral pressed the start switch and the engine started. I know one or two items in the user manual are incorrect so was wondering if this is normal or should it work as stated in the manual?

Wouldn't be surprised if the manual is incorrect. In my opinion, it is working as it should. That is you shouldn't be able to start in gear with the side stand down.

I only wondered because other bikes I have owned have this ability (makes restarting quick if you stall in traffic), ie in gear, side stand up and clutch disengaged. Should have said in original post I retracted the side stand and tried to start in gear with clutch disengaged.

Mine starts in first with the clutch pulled (stand up), that's one way to eliminate the clunk when going to first from neutral. Starter does not engage with side stand down whether clutch is pulled or not.

Yes, it should start in gear with side stand up and clutch lever squeezed in. There may be an issue with the clutch switch.

Problem solved. Clutch lever has a peg which engages with a captive spring steel finger that operates the clutch switch, on inspection the spring steel finger is missing just the broken edge showing. No idea how that happened!

JPC,
ya made me go out and look at mine!

It's the springy blade that the clutch lever peg pushes on a tiny microswitch. The blade hangs kinda out there. I figure it could get snagged when washing the bike with a mitt, for example.

I don't see an easy McGyver fix for that, will require switch assembly replacement.
