Hi everyone and Happy New Year!!! I have been working on some modifications to my V50 iii, and am considering an exhaust mod. I am looking at getting rid of the crossover and going to stainless steel exhaust pipe that drops an additional 6" under the motor so your foot doesn't hit it when braking or shifting. Additionally I want to open the reatrictor on the slip on. I know I will have to richen the mixture, but does anyone have any experience with doing this and if it will improve performance?
 
My understanding is a cross over helps to scavenge exhaust gases from the opposite cylinder. Going 6 inches lower my impact your cornering clearance. Hopefully you can get access to an exhaust gas analyzer, or your are really good at reading spark plugs to get the fueling correct.
 
I burned my new boot on the exhaust of my V65 the other day but mostly that was because the brake pedal was bent and poorly adjusted. If the pedals are where they should be to stock exhaust location seems OK. One bad thing about dropping the exhaust is it will make it harder to load on ramps if you have to take it somewhere in a ute
 
Most aftermarket small block stainless steel exhaust makers (in UK at least) retain the crossover for reason John says. Not sure I already mentioned it but fitting/specifying a V65 exhaust on a V50III will usually drop the headers a bit because V65 cylinder is a higher. To drop the silencer sections, you will need to have longer exhaust brackets at the end of the lower rails.

I doubt you'll get performance improvement by gutting the exhausts (beyond the noise factor), & upping idle and main jets by 20% is more to get into right air/fuel ratio to avoid lean burning effects. I stuck a V65 engine in my V50III frame just for 'optics' of bigger cylinders - performance is roughly the same.
 
Interesting, some of the considered mod is admittedly for that sound, and less about performance. I also liked the look of the pipes running under the sump instead of right by the foot pegs, plus melting a boot on the brake side. Just considering at the moment, haven't fully decided.
 
6” under the sump scares me.
I’m afraid you might run out of ground clearance under heavy breaking. If the exhaust hits the ground and unloads the front wheel, you will crash.
 
I’m not sure the cost associated with making a custom exhaust is worth it. I would probably start with replacing the mufflers with something shorter if you want a more aggressive look and souns.
