V7 iii Spark Plug Cover Screws

Anyone have a miserable time trying to get the fixing screws lined up when putting on the spark plug cover on the V7 iii? Any tips? I feel like I’ve tried everything and they are just impossible to line up without stripping a screw.
I just finished valve clearances and I have air coming out of one of my engine head fixing screws (the large silver ones). I confirmed the washer was in place before tightening. Getting a light amount of oil spatter around it. Is it possible I over tightened it?
 
Keegs, In my experience anytime I was worried that I may have stripped a bolt, I usually have. Remove the bolt check the threads. Check the gasket. Step 3, go to the online store and hope that the last set of stainless steel bolts that Todd milled up are still available and buy them.
