I just finished the break in maintenance on my 2023 V7 Special with 1001 miles. I bought the oil filter housing o-ring and crush washers at the dealer. The o-ring they gave me was a lot smaller diameter than the one that came off. Had to stretch it quite a bit to get it over the filter housing. I've used many o-rings and never have seen an application where one was stretched this much. Usually not stretched at all in fact. Did the dealer give me the wrong o-ring?

Found 3 slightly tight valves and 1 perfect. A bit of oil in the breather box. The back brake pads were impossible to see. All else looked good.

The long bolt has a crush washer, then the cover plate with an O ring in it. No stretching over a filter involved. Look at the parts book. Sounds like you got it wrong. FYI, the filter cover goes up into the crankcase one way or it will leak.
Are you sure you were on TDC on the compression stroke. I've done a lot of the small blocks and usually they are all loose, not tight.

Perhaps I misspoke. Yes the o-ring goes over the filter cover. It had to be stretched quite a bit in my opinion. I am an industrial mechanic and have seen too many o-ring applications to count. And I have never seen an application where an o-ring was stretched over a component this much. In fact they're usually not stretched at all. Or just enough to not fall off. I rode the motorbike for over 10 miles and it's not leaking or seeping any oil whatsoever. So I guess that's the way they want it.

"Are you sure you were on TDC on the intake stroke." Well, I got as close as I could going by feel with a piece of plastic tubing stuck down there and wiggling the rear wheel back and forth. I read somewhere that if you remove the little cover on the right side of the engine you could see timing marks line up. I couldn't see anything in there. Partly at least because the view was blocked by the intake/throttle body. I didn't write them down but 2 exhausts and 1 intake were 0.001 or 0.002 inch too tight. I loosened them up and put them where they should be. Have I made mistakes before? Yes. Could I have made a mistake? Yes. But better loose than tight anyway. And the motorbike runs and drives as it should in my opinion. And the valves don't sound loud to me.

But I was interested to know if anyone else had to stretch that o-ring over the filter cover.

I just did the oil change on my V7 and do not recall that the o-ring needed extensive stretching. Maybe you got the wrong size from the dealer?? The part# for the correct one is: GU 90706444.

Thanks. I specifically asked the parts guy to print me out an itemized receipt with the part numbers. Which he did. And now I can't find it so I don't know. The manual said to put a little oil on the o-ring before putting it on the cover. It was so tight that the o-ring kept popping off and I had to dry it off for it to stay on the cover. That's how much I had to stretch it.

Wrong one but I'd let it ride until the next change. I think I've changed one O ring in the last 20 changes. But, I always have one in stock. The crush washer always gets changed.
I think I'm going to do just that. I'll measure the old o-ring and order a few and swap it the next change. I was out for about 50 miles yesterday and no leaks. Not a very sophisticated design application there. I was surprised to see how gnarly the crush washer was though. Not a very smooth surface there. No leaks.

NAPA has 8mm and 10mm aluminum crush washers for $1.50 each. The dealer charged me $5 and $6. The dealer charged me $6 for the o-ring. Probably about $1 on ebay.

Remember this, if you don't support your dealer, you won't have one in the future.

I pay for every word posted here, note this is not a social media website. It’s a Tech based site by name. Simple answer, if the o-ring didn’t match the size of the one removed, they gave you the wrong one. I have some service items available to those who are far away from the dealer below. And we offer upgrades there to make your bike run immensely better.

Well, it seemed like a lot for those items and it does bother me that the dealer gave me the wrong o-ring. But for me the biggest issue is that the dealer is a 70 minute drive for me. So, for example, going back to return the o-ring isn't a practical option at all.

Thanks for those links GMT. I wish I had known these were available. Looks like everything you need there and I'm guessing they're the correct parts. I'll be ordering from you next time.

I will add that I was impressed with that Castrol Edge 10w-60. That is some heavy duty motor oil. I was thinking about just doing a drain and refill after 3K miles between the regular service intervals. But looking at that stuff I imagine it could shear down quite a bit and still provide good lubrication. I wonder if anybody has had their used oil analyzed.

Remarkably I found the receipt on the garage floor. The part number is GU 90706444 on the receipt. The o-ring was just loose, not in a package. So the dealer must have grabbed the wrong o-ring I guess. Measured the old one It was a 3.5mm CS x 44mm ID. The one the dealer gave me was a 3.5mm CS x 38mm ID.
