Hi,
I scanned the entire 2017 V7III (all bikes) Service Station Manual for the cylinder head torque numbers, but i couldn't find any reference to it. Does anyone knows what they are, and where I can find them?
Also,
Kevin M mentioned in a V7II thread that the head screws come over-tightened from the factory, and that it is recommended to loosen them and re-torque. Is it a common Guzzi thing?
Thank you!
Avner

The V7 III uses steel base and head gaskets. I do not believe the re-torque is necessary, nor have I found any note to it either.

I believe there was a service bulletin some years back that covered the early 1TB motors saying retorque was still necessary. I'd assume that applies to all heron head smallblocks.

But with the new hemi head V9 and V7III who knows. If there's no mention in the service manual, and Todd hasn't seen a bulletin on it, then I would think it's possible it is no longer required.

Sure would like to hear that from Piaggio though.

Completed first service this weekend at 950 miles. Even before the service it felt like the bike "Opened up" at about 850 miles. No drama to report, but while checking the valve adjustment I found the left head clearance on both intake and exhaust valves to be way too wide (over five 0.mm) while the ones on the right head were only a bit wide and almost perfect.
The bike runs well, and I can't tell you how much I enjoy it! :h:

kofiko, i'm ron, and have 650 miles on my blue v7111 special and am doing the first service early. will report on valve clearances. i'm in arlington, just down the street from la moto. would like to talk to you off the forum about your bike experience so far. ronpaci@ronpaci.com send me an email if you feel like it....

What conclusion did you come to for valve clearances? I haven't checked on the bike yet but am going to do the first service work today... and the manual doesn't list those numbers.

I don't know about the current series big block engines, but the older ones (my 850-T3, 850-T, LeMans 1000 bikes) used a composite head gasket that took a good while to compress down to its final thickness. Assembly procedure on that engine used to include setting the stud torque to about 10% over the running spec and letting it sit for a day, then backing off the nuts and retightening it to spec. I used to include a retorque with every valve adjustment until it didn't change any more ... On the 850-T engine (which I rebuilt the heads on when it passed 50,000 miles), I found the new head gaskets compressed a little bit through the initial after-rebuild service (1500 miles) and the next two regular services (6000 miles and 12,000 miles).

But the V7III and V9 supposedly have thin metal head gaskets. Those won't compress as much if at all ...

The V7III service manual refers you to the "MSS Engine 750 Euro 4" manual when you hit the Engine Service section. I don't see a manual by that name downloadable from Guzzitech.com, the closest here is the "Engine V750 IE" manual. But that refers to the older engine with Heron heads.

There's also a V9 Service Manual on Guzzitech. In this manual, the Engine section refers you to a "MSS Engine V750 IE My2012", also not on the Guzzitech.com site. But I see a recent V9 Engine manual now downloadable. Since the V9 and V7III engines are pretty similar, especially with respect to the hemispherical combustion chamber cylinder head in particular, I flipped through that and got to this section on the cylinder head fixing nuts:

V9_head-nut_tightening_torque.webp

I haven't had Racer's cylinder head cover off yet, but the stud sizes would make sense to be pretty close, if not identical, between V7III and V9, and those tightening torques look about right too. Looks like there are five nuts per head, four main stud fasteners and one smaller one up in the pushrod area.

No comments in the service or owners manuals for either V7III or V9 as to whether a cylinder head retorque is required when doing the first (or subsequent) engine service. Next time I'm up by my dealer's shop, I'll ask there. They have more experience than I do with this series of engines.

I have, and both base and head gaskets are metal, same type as the 1200 8V motor. Re-torque not required.

I'm about to DIY my first service. Can the valve cover gaskets be reused if not damaged? Or do they always get damaged/replaced?

On a III???
should get 10-20 times out of the III.

oh shoot, yes, III's gasket is rubber with steel braiding...

My eyes COMPLETELY ignored that fact...

I was referring to my V7...lol...looks like I need to get my eyes checked.

Thanks for correction. I almost ordered a set of gaskets "just in case". The parts are cheap and not a big deal but I'd rather wait till I have other stuff to buy to qualify for free shipping.
