Will the dash USB port power a GPS?

Rather than run a lead down to the battery I would like to power my Zumo via the built in USB outlet on the left dash on an extended trip. Is there enough power through that outlet to do so?

I’ve got the power cable for the dash/front usb running my Tom Tom on my V100s.

Glad to hear it powers it just fine, thanks everyone! It's probably not the ideal way but for now I plan to connect from USB (on the dash) to the mini USB on the Garmin. Neither connection is water proof but I'll just unplug when I get in anything more than a light drizzle.

for my XT, I use the hard power mount which is waterproof and just use the power from the USB leads - I don’t use the USB plug itself. This just worked great on a trip this last week when I got caught in bad rain twice…totally waterproof setup.

Mine is an XT and will be on that mount. So did you remove some of the dash panels to access the rear of the USB outlet? Then remove the female USB connector in there and connect its wires to the Zumo lead from the cradle?

Yes, that’s exactly what I did. Though I used positaps to start with to make certain it all worked properly. The power supply for the XT fits nicely behind the body panel for the front USB outlet, then I ran the cable to the XT mount. I’m happy to take some pics if that helps.

Pictures of modifications, installations, or removals are always a great and lasting way to share your information with others.

Please, I would love to see them. 👍

Thank you very much. 🙏

That sounds like a good set-up. I don't use a GPS on my bikes often but it's useful to have, especially on trips. I wish Garmin incorporated the 12v - 5v converter in the cradle with a 12V SAE plug there instead of putting it in the cable back by the battery.

Yes, I plugged my Garmin Zumo XT into the dash usb port while riding the bike. No problem and it kept it charged. Would not recommend doing this with the bike not running and only the ignition turned to On.
