World's Weirdest Wheelnut

Hi All - maybe it's just me but the wheelnut on the front of my 1100 Sport IE is the strangest shape nut I've seen. I've got the toolkit but nothing in there. The manual says 01929300 is the tool but I can't find one in the UK.
Do people replace this part with a standard nut as I can't see why you wouldn't? Is the thread and pitch something sensible? Thanks

If you don't have a fitting tool for it, I would get rid of it. You might be able to get it on and off in the garage but imagine you're stuck on a tour without whatever you'd used in your garage...

Yes, replace it. I sourced these more than 20 years ago for Guzzisti here. The thread sizes are fairly standard, but the nut thickness/height is massive. The ones I originally got were "thin" versions. Not sure what the version John links above, but my guess it's similar to what I found forever ago. I cannot recall the size(s) before you ask. If you find a suitable replacement, please post the info here (not a hyperlink please).

Assuming this is a M16 thin nut as suggested then Gutsibits are listing a similar part SSA92516 with a wavy washer (presumably used as the nut is not a self-locking type). Think I'll get the Stilsons on it then measure the thread to be sure.
I can get an Aerotight nut in stainless from Kayfast which would be nicer if it's not too thick but maybe the Guzzi part is not a standard coarse metric thread - a measure will tell me.

You don't need a locking nut. The axle when tightened loads the wheel bearings. The pinch bolts in the fork legs hold the axle in place once the axle nut is tightened. I think the part number I gave you is also a replacement for the gland nut on EV axles.
 
Well I'm glad I checked as it's M18 x 1.5p.
Resistance was futile once I borrowed the 24" Stilsons from work.
Found a nice looking plated self locking (not stainless sadly) nut on ebay that they sell in a pack of 1 so I'll do that. Item 296647520526, only £5.80 posted.
Accept what you say about the axle clamps John but the one I took off was nyloc so I'll replace with similar.

I have the socket for that nut. Same was used on EVs. but they were not self locking. It is a gland nut and commonly used in many applications. A hook wrench can be used to remove and tighten them and are also used on steering head stems.
