At least it didn't fail on the road. Was cleaning the bike and thought the clutch could do with half a turn. But it wouldn't, so I took the lever off for a better look. Couldn't see this with the lever on at all.

Felt smooth. I'm guessing because it was retained within the outer to some extent. The only real sign was that I thought it needed adjustment - Probably because there's only one bundle left on the cable.

On the dry lube front there are plently to choose from these days. WD40 even do it, in fact they do two types - specialist anti friction dry ptfe & normal dry ptfe.
 
Well new cable fitted. Design is changed from the original as the radiused metal tube at the lever end is gone now. The cable is flexible after the end ferule at the lever end.

I think the fraying started because the cable got caught in the adjuster slot and the slot acted like a pair of snips when the cable was being adjusted. The cable should not be protruding through the slot when tension has been adjusted, ie the slot facing forward. I've compared the relative positions of my aftermarket levers with the oe MG levers and everything is the same so the slot is my theory at present.

A, late, update to the (suspected) reason for the cable fraying. It was my aftermarket lever. Compared to the MG lever the cable ferrule holding hole was several mm further away from the lever pivot point causing the cable to rub in the cable adjuster slot.
I've reverted to the MG non adjustable lever and all is as smooth as butter.

Pazzo levers (Todd might sell them) are fantastic. Beautiful, bulletproof and very comfortable. I replaced both stock levers on my V7 III with them and they are well worth the cost.
