I do not cry for help ofte, but I need some input. JUst last week finished a 1700 trip, bike ran without afault, 40 MPG,Yada, Yada. Today on a short trip I noticed the left cylinder was runnin hot and low on power. Last time this happened it was the spark plug cap that the P.O. had torn taking the plug cap off. No problem, just happen to have a spare. Let the engine cool for about 20 mins, while I am on the side of the road, I did notice several bikes fly by without so much as a head turn.

I start the bike, but the power is down(12,273 miles). I decide to limp down the road the 6 miles home. Now for the next good news, the instrument panel goes blank. Gas filter, valve adjustments and TB balance finished at 10,000.
NO I am not giving it away and No you can take it home to fix.

Check the main ground behind the starter cover. Then go over all other connections/connectors (battery, instrument panel etc) if that doesn't take care of the problem.

How old is the battery? Has it done the thump when you hit the starter? If the battery is at or near 2 years old, replace it. Early failing batteries will exhibit this behavior, including a blank dash screen and often "ECU" warning with two small plugs, unplugged, shown on the screen. Post what you find on John's words above.

Thanks for the input about concerning the poor performance of my Stelvio. After all of the normal checks: spark plugs, compression and leak down, I determined it was not a mechanical problem. The battery load test was great and the chassis ground seems to be in place. I replaced the plugs as a matter of course. Fired the bike, started just fine, within 30 sec's the engine was stumbling and the display was acting crazy. I found that the plug wire on the right side had burn through the spark plug boot and was arcing against the tappet cover. The burn was on the bottom side of the boot.

Thanks for all of the help.

Most Stelvio owners replace the crappy stock spark plug leads with NGK leads. You might want to consider this mod to avoid similar problems in the future.

Do the plug caps earlier then later, tape won't last too long. They can be had online for pretty cheap these days.
